Revelation Study #4 – Chapters 6 & 7 – Randy Thomas
Revelation chapter 6 the wrath of the Lamb the seven seals unsealed the white horse conquest revelation 6 verse 1 then I saw when the lamb broke one of the seven seals and I heard one of the four living creatures saying with a voice of thunder come revelation 6 verse 2 I looked and behold a white horse and he who sat on it had a bow and a crown was given to him and he went out conquering and to conquer the first thing that takes place upon the earth once the church has been taken out the moment this first seal is broken the Antichrist comes forth on a white horse he is the false messiah the false Christ and he begins to conquer over the earth bringing the earth under the sphere of his power and control because we are told and again to prove that Satan is still in control of the world we are told in Revelation 13 that Satan will give to him his throne and his authority so he is going to turn the earth over to the Antichrist but we see his emergence here the first thing after the church is gone now according to Paul in 2nd Thessalonians 2 talking about the Antichrist he cannot come forth until the church is out of the way for that which hinders shall hinder until it is taken out of the way and then shall the son of perdition be revealed so he cannot be revealed until the hindering force is removed which is the Spirit of God within the Church of Jesus Christ note it does not say that the Holy Spirit is removed the Holy Spirit will still be here during the tribulation multitudes will be saved during the tribulation the Holy Spirit will be present in his ministry of bringing the elect of the tribulation to faith in Christ the Holy Spirit will also aid tribulation believers as they live holy lives unto the Lord the Holy Spirit will also function to seal and protect the 144,000 Jewish witnesses for their great evangelistic ministry as noted in Revelation 7 and 14 and the two witnesses of Revelation 11 the church is the only preserving influence in the world today if it were not for the church even the United States would be down the tubes already now they hate us because we are restraining them from all of the evil that they would love to be doing of course all the wealth of the Christians will be left here and divided up by the world and everybody will be having great days as they come in to plunder the goods of the Christians and the Antichrist will offer his new economic programs and his new peace proposals and they will say yes the church was responsible for all the wars now that we got those war mongers out of here we can have peace here on earth and he is going to come in with peace and prosperity and the big program and they will think that this guy is it this guy has saved the world the world was ready to go down the tubes but this man has saved the world he will be hailed as the Messiah or the savior he goes forth conquering and to conquer but after three and a half years things change man tells us that the world is getting better the Bible tells us that the world will become increasingly worse man says that peace among nations is close at hand God says there will be wars and rumors of wars Kingdom against Kingdom man expects to win the battle against disease famine and hardship God says there is to be fearful judgments of disease famine and hardship the idea of a satanic dictator over men goes back all the way to Nimrod the ruler over Babel in Genesis chapter 10 verses 8 through 14 it is said he was a mighty hunter before the Lord in the sense of being a mighty hunter of men in the face of God in a of cents this final satanic dictator over man will be the most terrible he will rule over men as a false messiah and lead man in organized rebellion against God in the pattern of Nimrod his first predecessor he is the one often called the Antichrist the political and social scene of today is certainly set for the emergence of such a political leader all that is waiting is for the Lord to allow it in his timing and after he takes his church out of the picture and now you know what is restraining that he may be revealed in his own time for the mystery of lawlessness is already at work only he who restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way second Thessalonians 2 verses 6 and 7 significantly the first seal opened brings this dictator to prominence and we are told that the 70th week of Daniel 9 begins when this dictator will confirm a covenant with the many Jewish people the Red Horse war revelation 6 verse 3 when he broke the second seal I heard the second living creature saying come revelation 6 verse 4 and another a red horse went out and to him who sat on it it was granted to take peace from the earth and that men would slay one another and a great sword was given to him the Red Horse brings war and conflict all this writer must do is to take peace from the earth men do the rest of the destruction among themselves peace between men is a gift from God it is not the natural state of relations between men this authority is granted to the horseman that is directly or indirectly the judgment of God we live in the age of war and conflict since World War two there have been more than 150 Wars of one kind or another and right now there are some 3 dozen armed conflicts taking thousands of lives yearly the nations of the world spend more than 1 trillion dollars on military expenditures a year the black horse devastation revelation 6 verse 5 when he broke the third seal I heard the third living creature say come I looked and behold a black horse and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand revelation 6 verse 6 and I heard something like a voice in the center of the four living creatures saying a quart of wheat for a Denarius and three quarts of barley for a Denarius and do not damage the oil and the wine the black horse brings scarcity and inequity the scales symbolize the need to carefully measure in ration foods it is a time of scarcity the prices reflect food costs that are about twelve times higher than normal it will cost a day’s wage to buy the ingredients for a loaf of bread this describes a time of famine when life will be reduced to the barest necessities we already are seeing the beginning of rising food cost with record prices and shortages of grain and the price of oil continuing to climb higher and higher yet comparative luxuries will be available for those who can afford them there will still be the oil and the wine that should not be harmed we see great famine in the world today yet fewer people suffer from famine today than a hundred years ago however understanding the ecological balance it would not take much to plunge much of the world into the kind of scarcity and inequity mentioned here it is amazing how fast a supermarket can be cleaned out during an emergency as we witnessed during recent disasters like Hurricane Katrina the store shelves were completely emptied within just a couple of hours oil and wine is equivalent in our culture to toiletries beauty aids and liquor in other words luxuries this is more than the famine alone it describes global rationing and controls the coming world leader will control the economy see revelation 13 verse 17 also Amos chapter 8 verse 11 The Pale Horse death and hell revelation 6 verse 7 when the lamb broke the fourth seal I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying come revelation 6 verse 8 I looked and behold an ashen horse and he who sat on it had the name death and Hades was following with him authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by the wild beasts of the earth the ashen or pale horse brings death there will be a tremendous death toll from the dictatorship war famine and other calamities our century has seen hundreds of millions killed by dictators Wars and famines yet this will pale in comparison to the death toll that comes in the wake of this ultimate dictator no wonder Jesus could say for then there will be Great Tribulation such has not been seen since the beginning of the world until this time no nor ever shall be Matthew 24 verse 21 chloros the greek word meaning pale is the same word from which we get the word chlorine or bleached and chlorophyll or green notice the power is given to the horseman though all hell is breaking loose on the earth God is very much in control revelation 6 verse 9 when the lamb broke the fifth seal I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the Word of God and because of the testimony which they had maintained revelation and they cried out with a loud voice saying how long O Lord holy and true will you refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who dwell on the earth revelation 6 verse 11 and there was given to each of them a white robe and they were told that they should rest for a little while longer until the number of their fellow servants and their brethren who were to be killed even as they had been would be completed also so here is a group not the church who had been martyred during this period of the reign of the Antichrist now when the Antichrist comes forth to reign upon the earth he will make war against the Saints and prevail against them the scripture tells us they could not be the church because the gates of hell can’t prevail against the church but when the church is raptured I believe the earth is going to experience one of its greatest revivals in all of history think of all your friends and family members that you have witnessed to many of them just laughed and scoffed at you but when the rapture takes place all the things that you shared with them will suddenly come to mind it is going to be a sobering day for them and they’re going to realize what a fool they had been and when the Antichrist begins to establish his reign his authority his power hopefully they will have enough sense to resist him which will mean their death because he has the power to put to death those that do resist that is those that refuse to take the mark or worship his image but through their martyrdom at least they will be gaining their salvation the fifth seal brings forth the cry of the martyrs things are going badly the bow of the horsemen on the white horse is broken blood flows famine follows disease and sickness run rampant so who does the world blame the believers who come to Christ during the tribulation that these souls are under the altar emphasizes that their life blood has been poured out as an offering to God it draws from Leviticus 4 verse 7 and he shall pour the remaining blood at the base of the altar of the burnt offering it is probably best to see this as a cry of all the martyrs for God’s truth not merely believers persecuted by the coming world leader revelation 6 verse 12 I looked when he broke the sixth seal and there was a great earthquake and the Sun became black as sackcloth made of hair and the whole moon became like blood revelation and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as a fig tree casts its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind revelry should the sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up and every mountain and Island were moved out of their place revelation then the kings of the earth and the great men and the commanders and the rich and the strong and every slave and free man hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains revelation 6 verse 16 and they said to the mountains and to the rocks fall on us and hide us from the presence of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb revelation 6 verse 17 for the great day of their wrath has come and who is able to stand the sixth seal brings cosmic disruptions in the beginning celestial disturbances are frequently associated with the return of the Messiah Isaiah Jeremiah Ezekiel Joel Zephaniah and Jesus himself all describes such phenomenon for example the great day of the Lord is near it is near and hastens quickly the noise of the day of the Lord is bitter there the mighty men shall cry out that day is a day of wrath a day of trouble and distress a day of devastation and desolation a day of darkness and gloominess a day of clouds and thick darkness a day of trumpet and alarm against the fortified cities and against the high towers Zephaniah 1 verses 14 through 16 or as in Joel chapter 2 verses 10 and 11 the sun and moon grow dark and stars diminish their brightness for the day of the Lord is great and terrible who can adorn it there’s a cataclysmic catastrophic shaking going on why some suggest this describes a nuclear winter the result of a nuclear exchange in which the Sun would be darkened the stars would fall and the tectonic plates would shift but I suggest the shaking and quaking is the result of God Himself getting involved when he sees his kids being attacked there are those who say the wrath of the Lamb the real tribulation does not happen until midway into this seven-year period they believe the church is raptured immediately before Antichrist enters the temple demanding to be worshipped as God adherence to this view called the mid tribulation or pre-wrath rapture would do well to read revelation 6 more carefully because revelation 6 verse 16 makes it clear that the wrath of the Lamb occurs at the beginning of the tribulation not halfway through notice this is called the great day of his wrath the wrath of the Lamb it is comforting to note in 1st Thessalonians that God has not appointed us unto wrath Paul also declares that in Romans that we have not been appointed unto wrath the day of his wrath has come which means we cannot be here because we have not been appointed unto wrath but the earth is going to experience this great cataclysmic judgment as the day of God’s wrath does come upon the earth Isaiah 23 verse 9 the Lord of Hosts has purposed it to stain the pride of all glory and to bring into contempt all the honorable of the earth observations how do these seals fit in there has been much conjecture and debate about these matters but it seems that the seals trumpets and bowls are not strictly sequential events chronologically the trumpets do not follow the seals and the bowls do not follow the trumpets the first six seals are a summary of the judgments distributed over the whole book a brief summary of what will occur in the day of the Lord up to the time of his actual apocalypse or unveiling in chapter 19 in that span it begins with the revealing of the Antichrist the first seal and it concludes with the revealing of the face of him who sits on the throne the seventh seal do the seals represent conditions immediately before the end or more general conditions prevailing over a more extended period up until the return of Jesus there is a sense in which we can say that they represent both dictators famine war death and persecution have been familiar throughout all history but not to the magnitude and severity with which they will be present in the Great Tribulation the wars and famines predicted in the 2nd and 3rd seal are not unfamiliar events in the history of the world but never before since the time of Noah has a judgment so devastating been consummated as to destroy one-fourth of the Earth’s population at one stroke as far as the seals are concerned it will be an intense amplification of business-as-usual God will give mankind over to his fallenness and more this is not the case with some of the trumpet and Bowl judgments of later chapters they are completely unique manifestations of God’s judgment the sixth seal concludes with a valid question who is able to stand only the believer who is justified by grace through faith in Jesus Christ therefore having been justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand Romans 5 verses 1 & 2 I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you which you also received and in which you stand 1st Corinthians 15 verse 1 testifying that this is the true grace of God in which you stand 1st Peter 5 verse 12 the believer may stand because Jesus bore the wrath that the believer deserved our response we should be inspired with the urgency of our witness to the world do you want our friends our neighbors to go through the terrible scenes here described are you withholding the truth from those whose eternity can yet be altered chapter 6 concludes with the statement for the great day of his wrath has come and who shall be able to stand this next chapter seems to respond to that question in each of the major series of sevens the seals trumpets and bowls we notice that there always appears to be an inserted parenthetical passage between the 6th and 7th of each series having completed six of the seven seals chapter 7 pauses for some amplification before we continue with the 7th seal in chapter 8 Israel is the centerpiece in the Old Testament and it now Ria’s as the centerpiece of God’s climax in Revelation it is also the centerpiece in the New Testament but there is a lot of misunderstanding just how it is interesting how Israel again is at the center of world events today chapter 7 deals with the sealing of the 144,000 Jews 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes Revelation chapter 7 from tribulation to jubilation revelation 7 verse 1 after this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth holding back the four winds of the earth so that no wind would blow on the earth nor on the sea nor on any tree revelation 7 verse 2 and I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the Sun having the seal of the Living God and he cried out with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth in the sea revelation 7 verse 3 saying do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees until we have sealed the bond servants of our God on their foreheads the 144,000 holding back judgment until the servants of God are sealed the phrase four corners of the earth is an ancient and sometimes modern equivalent to the idea of the four points of the compass the winds spoken of here are a destructive force of God’s judgment as they often are in the Old Testament Hosea 13 verse 15 gives an example though he is fruitful among his brethren and Eastwind shall come the wind of the Lord shall come from the wilderness then his spring will become dry and his fountains shall be dried up the four winds of the earth may refer back to the four horsemen after the pattern of Zechariah 6 1 through 8 wherefore chariots with horses of the same colours of Revelation 6 1 through 8 go out to all the earth and are called the four spirits of heaven with spirits being the Hebrew Ruach which is also translated winds though the 144,000 are sealed for a specific and unique purpose the general idea of being sealed is not limited to them Jesus was sealed he said God the Father had set his seal on him John 6 verse 27 we are sealed with the Holy Spirit as a downpayment of our eventual total Redemption God who has also sealed us and given us the spirit in our hearts as a guarantee 2nd Corinthians 1 21 and 22 this sealing of the Holy Spirit belongs to every believer when they are saved having believed you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise Ephesians 1 verse 13 the sealing of the Holy Spirit is meant to be both a comfort and a challenge to us we are comforted in that it assures us that we belong to him but it challenges us to depart from all evil and identify ourselves with the one we belong to nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands having this seal the Lord knows those who are his and let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity 2nd Timothy 2 verse 19 and do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption Ephesians 4 verse 30 revelation 7 verse 4 and I heard the number of those who were sealed 144,000 sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel revelation 7 verse 5 from the tribe of Judah 12,000 were sealed from the tribe of Reuben 12,000 from the tribe of GAD 12,000 revelation 7 verse 6 from the tribe of Asher 12,000 from the tribe of Naphtali 12,000 and from the tribe of Manasseh 12,000 revelation 7 verse 7 from the tribe of Simeon 12,000 from the tribe of Levi 12,000 and from the tribe of Issachar 12,000 revelation 7 verse 8 from the tribe of Zebulun 12,000 from the tribe of Joseph 12,000 and from the tribe of Benjamin 12,000 were sealed the number of those sealed specifically each tribe is listed with notable exceptions the first exception is the omission of the tribe of Dan why is Dan left out some think it is because Dan is thought to be the tribe of the Antichrist based on Daniel 11 verse 37 and Jeremiah 8 verse 16 but without doubt Dan was the tribe which introduced idolatry into the nation of Israel see genesis 49 verse 17 and judges 18 verse 30 but Dan is the first tribe listed in Ezekiel’s millennial roll-call of the tribes ezekiel chapter 48 this is a remarkable sign of God’s Redemption the second exception is the way that Ephram is slighted he is referred to indirectly in the way that the tribe of Joseph is mentioned but so is the tribe of Manasseh meaning that the reference to joseph has to do with Ephraim why perhaps it is because the tribe of Ephraim was also associated with great idolatry Hosea 4 verse 17 it is often claimed that this list must be purely symbolic because it is irregular but what is a regular listing of the tribes there are not less than 20 different ways of listing the tribes in the Old Testament including one that omits the tribe of Dan first corinthians 4 through 7 just because a list is different doesn’t mean it’s fanciful symbolism it is proper to regard all of these lists as legitimate and to consider that each specific variation serves a purpose meaning to emphasize something who are these 144,000 many different groups have claimed to be the 144,000 for example the Jehovah’s Witnesses say their entire group was until they surpassed 144,000 and number now the 144,000 are only a select group of witnesses who go to heaven most scholars either see the 144,000 as the church or has converted Jews still identified as Israelites in some manner it is an important issue if they are the church then the church is definitely in the great tribulation but sealed for survival through the Great Tribulation some facts about the 144,000 from revelation 7 and 14 give us insight regarding their identity they are called the children of Israel chapter 7 verse 4 their tribal affiliation is specific chapter 7 verses 4 through 8 they seem to be protected and triumphant through the period of God’s wrath meeting with Jesus at Mount Zion at his return chapter 14 verse 1 they are celibate chapter 14 verse 4 they are the firstfruits of a great harvest chapter 14 verse 4 they are marked by integrity and faithfulness chapter 14 verse 5 how 144,000 Jews could be symbolic of the church is beyond my comprehension this interpretation is a good example of the fanciful ideas that people seem to delight in pulling out a halation what would God have to do to convince us that he is speaking about 144,000 Jews he says they are Jews specifically he calls them the sons of Israel revelation 7 verse 4 he even enumerates them by their tribes stating that 12,000 will come from each tribe does he need to put a flashing neon sign in the sky that says I’m talking about Jews what is the role of these 144,000 Jews during the tribulation what is their purpose all the text says is that they will be bond servants of God revelation 7 verse 3 but the context indicates that they will serve the Lord as evangelists I say this because their description is followed immediately by the description of a great multitude which no one can count from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues revelation 7 verse 9 John sees this great host of people in heaven standing before the throne of God and he asks who are they and from where have they come revelation 7 13 he is told that they are the people who have come out of the Great Tribulation who have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb revelation 7 verse 14 in other words this multitude of Gentiles are those who accept Jesus after the rapture and who are martyred for their faith during the tribulation I don’t know if you have ever met a Messianic Jew that is a Jewish believer in Jesus Christ I have met a couple and heard many speak for the most part they are more excited about sharing Jesus with others than Gentile believers I know of at least 12 in the Bible that changed the world imagine what 144,000 of them could do revelation 7 verse 9 after these things I looked and behold a great multitude which no one could count from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues standing before the throne and before the lamb clothed in white robes and palm branches were in their hands revelation 7 verse 10 and they cry out with a loud voice saying salvation to our God who sits on the throne and to the lamb the great multitude more worship at the throne of God the diversity here is evidence that the Great Commission will be fulfilled before the end even as Jesus promised Matthew 24 verse 14 having an emblem of righteousness white robes they worshiped God for salvation something that is strangely taken for granted among earthly Saints the palm branches are reminiscent of Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem see John chapter 12 verses 12 through 16 where Jesus was also praised as Savior and King Hosanna means saved now revelation 7 verse 11 and all the angels were standing before the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God revelation 7 verse 12 saying amen blessing and glory and wisdom and Thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God for ever and ever amen all heavenly creatures join in worship now when the church sings it’s song of redemption verse 9 of chapter 5 they sang the new song saying thou art worthy the angels respond to that song and worship saying worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive the power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing here are the same things with a couple of differences to the church’s song they refer to riches for interestingly enough the Lord considers us as his treasure Paul prayed for the Ephesians that they might receive a spirit of wisdom and understanding that they might know that it is his riches in the saints or you might know how much God values you revelation 7 verse 13 then one of the elders answered saying to me these who are clothed in the white robes who are they and where have they come from revelation 7 verse 14 I said to him my lord you know and he said to me these are the ones who come out of the Great Tribulation and they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb who the people of the great multitude are in chapters 4 and 5 john recognized the church yet he doesn’t recognize this multitude before the throne therefore they cannot be the church they are those who were saved in the period of the Great Tribulation in the original the article is emphatic they are mostly if not all martyrs those in the great multitude are saved just like everybody else by the blood of the Lamb white by blood is an interesting phrase we don’t think of things being made white by blood but the blood of Jesus cleanses us though your sins are like scarlet they shall be white as snow though they are red like crimson they shall be as wool Isaiah chapter 1 verse 18 the existence of so many tribulation Saints is an eloquent expression of God’s grace and mercy because even in the midst of his wrath there are many saved the great multitudes also are perhaps an evidence of the evangelistic efforts of the 144,000 especially if a causal relationship is implied by presenting one right after the other now they came up out of the Great Tribulation which means that they were no doubt martyred during this tribulation period and we will read where the Antichrist takes over he is going to bring a new economic system which requires everyone receiving a mark and no-one being able to buy or sell without the mark however anyone who takes the mark will be consigned to a hopeless eternal future no hope for salvation for anyone who takes the mark of the beast so they have power or though to put to death those that refuse to take the mark of course not being able to buy or sell you can probably starve to death quite easily so a great number of people will be saved after the church is raptured revelation 7 verse 15 for this reason they are before the throne of God and they serve Him day and night in his temple and he who sits on the throne will spread his Tabernacle over them revelation 7 verse 16 they will hunger no longer nor thirst anymore nor will the Sun beat down on them nor any Heat revelation 7 verse 17 for the Lamb in the centre of the throne will be their Shepherd and will guide them to the springs of the water of life and God will wipe every tear from their eyes what this great multitude does they serve God heaven is not only a place of rest from earthly toil but also a place of privileged service they dwell with God the ultimate fulfillment of King David’s great desire in Psalm 27 for one thing have I desired of the Lord that will I seek that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life to behold the beauty of the Lord and to enquire in his temple they are cared for by the Lamb who is also their shepherd god wipes away their tears the thought of tears shed in heaven over a wasted life or unconfessed sin is a powerful motivator but has nothing to do with the meaning of this verse the point is that the grief and tears of the past speaking of their trials in the tribulation will be over when they get to heaven God will wipe away all tears resulting from their suffering on earth.
