Prepare for takeoff please fasten your seat belts thank you for joining us on our journey through the book of Revelation we ask that you remain seated except in case of rapture throughout the entire flight in case we experience turbulence or tribulation you’re about to embark on a journey through the final book of the Bible the book of Revelation the journey begins nearly two thousand years ago on a small Greek island in the Aegean Sea and ends in the not-so-distant future in a paradise that makes our wildest dreams and imaginations pale by comparison along the way you’ll meet some very interesting characters and experience sights and wonders that will literally take your breath away so take your seat and get comfortable it’s going to be a journey that just might change your life forever you many people say they can’t understand the book of Revelation but the Bible says in Jeremiah call to me and I will answer you and I will tell you great and mighty things which you do not know and also in isaiah through 10 we read remember the former things long past for I am God and there is no other I am God and there is no one like me declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things which have not been done saying my purpose will be established and I will accomplish all my good pleasure not only can we understand the Book of Revelation but we can be assured that what is written in it is true many have the idea the world will grow better and bitter until the coming of the Millenium and everybody will be converted and you will hear that stuff preached but the bible does not teach any such trash last days quote from Billy Sunday from his 1913 sermon entitled the second coming CH Spurgeon in 1869 wrote of the last days we foresee from the word despite its obscurity that strange and wonderful events will happen such as are depicted by biles and warriors with avenging swords and falling stars and shriveled sky and a reeling earth and I know not what beside but when we have put all together and have been sore amazed at the visions that will flip before us like visions in the night we rejoice to learn at the end of them all all these things are ours whatever they may be have you ever tried to read the book of Revelation a lot of people start reading the Bible and skip to the end to find out what happens if you don’t know watch your reading this can be really scary there are a lot of books and commentaries written about the book of Revelation many are really good but most of them are outdated and rather boring come on now we’re in the 21st century and I think it’s time that we start thinking outside the box when it comes to the book of Revelation after all it’s probably the greatest book ever written no I didn’t say think outside the Bible I believe the best commentary on the Bible is the Bible itself revelation is the last of the 66 books that makes up the Bible and is just like the Lord to save the best for last this is definitely not going to be your daddy study on the book of Revelation we are living in a time of rapidly advancing technologies and in a world where terminology changes almost weekly for far too long we have been stuck with ancient outdated images regarding the Bible and especially the book of Revelation when most of us read the Bible our thoughts and images immediately take us back to ancient biblical times and while for the most part that works for the majority of the Bible we must remember that the book of Revelation takes place in the near future so as we read through the book of Revelation we need to envision a world more like the futuristic world we see in the Star Wars series of movies a world full of incredible sights and inspiring wonders magnificent creatures and still this will not even fully encompass or even come close to what we will really experience you’re about to embark on a journey through the final book of the Bible the book of Revelation you might want to fasten your seat belt because this journey is going to literally rock your world the journey begins nearly 2,000 years ago on a small Greek island in the Aegean Sea and ends in the not-so-distant future in a paradise that makes our wildest dreams and imaginations pale by comparison along the way you’ll meet some very interesting characters and experience sights and wonders that will literally take your breath away the book of Revelation is filled with angels and demons huge six winged creatures full of eyes the infamous four Horsemen of the Apocalypse Dragons bowls trumpets seals – men who can breathe fire and stop the rain all kinds of signs and symbols sights and sounds how does it all fit together and what is the Bible trying to tell us can we understand the book of Revelation the answer is yes not only can we understand the book of Revelation but in doing so we can receive a blessing from the Lord how many books do you know that can do that blessed is he who reads aloud the words of the prophecy and blessed are those who hear and who keep what is written therein for the time is near revelation so let’s dive in and trust the Lord that he will give you wisdom and understanding as we go verse by verse through the book of Revelation always remember acts in that they receive the word with all readiness of mind and searched the Scriptures daily whether these things were so Revelation chapter 1 the great unveiling revelation the revelation of Jesus Christ which God gave him to show to his bond servants the things which must soon take place and he sent and communicated it by his angel to his bond servant John the great unveiling the first thing we notice is that is the revelation not revelations who gave this revelation to Jesus God gave it to him the Greek word for revelation is apocalypsis which literally means unveiling or taking off the cover the book of Revelation is the unveiling of Jesus Christ the book unveils his relationship to the church to judgment and to the things to come in the future the purpose of revelation is to reveal to his servants things that must soon take place it’s like the big Consumer Electronics Show that’s held every year and unveils and announces to the world the latest technology that is going to change the world usually there are one or two innovations that are greatly anticipated some news might even have leaked out and there have been many rumors floating around about the product but until they actually unveil the product and show it to the public it’s anybody’s guess so it is with the book of Revelation we have read other books of the Bible that gives us hints about the future we’ve heard rumors but we really did not know for sure because it had not been revealed to us yet but now the curtain has been lifted and we can see and read with our own eyes soon take place the actual word is shortly the things that will shortly take place and the Greek translation of shortly is intact I meaning come to pass with rapidity it’s the same Greek word from which we get the word tachometer the instrument used to determine the speed of an engine it’s like going on a trip at the first smile markers go by slowly but but as you increase your speed those model markers start coming faster and faster so will be the events of Revelation at first it’ll be one sign and then down the road another sign but as things progress suddenly the signs will start coming faster and faster angel Graham the book was written by the Apostle John who at the time was in prison on the island of Patmos in the Aegean Sea John was praying and he began to see visions given to him by the Lord through an angel you might say he received an angel Graham these visions were signs and symbols of the things that were to happen in the future this takes place about 95 ad can you imagine being propelled 2,000 years to the future and then having to give a report how would you describe things you’ve never seen or heard before John was only able to give us descriptions of what he saw and heard based upon his own knowledge and ending of events that he experienced in the first century AD by the time of this writing it was close to the end of the first century John was the last personal disciple of Jesus that remained alive all the others had perished long before all the other disciples had been martyred for their faith in Jesus Christ Matthew suffered martyrdom in Ethiopia killed by a sword wound mark died in Alexandria Egypt after being dragged by horses through the streets until he was dead Luke was hanged in Greece as a result of his tremendous preaching to the loss Peter was crucified upside down on an egg-shaped cross according to church tradition because he told his tormentors that he felt unworthy to die in the same way that Jesus Christ had died James the just the leader of the church in Jerusalem was thrown over a hundred feet down from the southeast pinnacle of the temple when he refused to deny his faith in Christ when they discovered that he survived the fall his enemies beat James to death with a Fuller’s Club this was the same pinnacle where Satan had taken Jesus during the temptation James the greater a son of Zebedee was a fisherman by trade when Jesus called him to a lifetime of ministry as a strong leader of the church james was ultimately beheaded at jerusalem bartholomew also known as nathaniel was a missionary to asia he witnessed to our Lord in present-day Turkey Bartholomew was martyred for his preaching in armenia when he was played to death by a whip andrew was crucified on x-shaped cross in Patras greece after being whipped severely by seven soldiers they tied his body to the cross with cords to prolong his agony his followers reported that when he was led down toward the cross andrew saluted and in these words i have long desired and expected this happy hour the Cross has been consecrated by the body of christ hanging on it he continued to preach to his tormentors for two days until he expired the Apostle Thomas was stabbed the spear in India during one of his missionary trips to the establish the church in the subcontinent Jude the brother of Jesus was killed with arrows when he refused to deny his faith in Christ Mathias the Apostle chosen to replace the traitor Judas Iscariot was stoned and then beheaded Barnabas one of the group of 70 disciples wrote the Epistle of Barnabas he preached throughout Italy in Cyprus Barnabas was stoned to death at Salonika the Apostle Paul was tortured and then beheaded by the evil emperor Nero at Rome in AD 67 Paul endured a lengthy imprisonment which allowed him to write his many epistles to the churches he had formed throughout the Roman Empire these letters which taught many of the foundational doctrines of Christianity form a large portion of the New Testament the details of the martyrdom of these disciples and apostles are found in traditional early church sources these traditions were recounted in the writings of the church fathers and the first official church history written by the historian Eusebius in AD 325 although we cannot at this time verify every detail historically the universal belief of the early Christian writers was that each of the Apostles had faced martyrdom faithfully without denying their faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ John faced martyrdom when he was boiled in a huge basin of boiling oil during a wave of persecution in Rome however he was miraculously delivered from death John was then sentenced to the mines on the prison island of Patmos he wrote his prophetic book of Revelation on Patmos the Apostle John was later freed and returned to serve as Bishop of Adisa in modern Turkey he died as an old man the only apostle to die peacefully bondservant the greek term for bondservant is doulos this term is used 14 times in the book of Revelation doulos is actually a title of honor and the bondservant often acted as an agent of his master representing his authority and doing the will of his master revelation 1 – who testified to the Word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ even to all that he saw signed sealed and delivered John certified that the things he saw and heard were from Jesus Christ himself no other book that I know of explains or even has to explain its supernatural origin or how it came into being John gave testimony to what he saw the truth and the whole truth and nothing but the truth revelation blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy and heed the things which are written in it for the time is near the book of Revelation is the only book that I know that can make this kind of bold statement you actually receive a blessing from reading and listening to the words of Revelation if you knew what would happen tomorrow would it change how you live today stop and think about it it makes sense when you realize that you’re reading the actual words of Jesus Christ you’re learning what the future holds for each of us knowing the future in advance has all kinds of benefits if you knew how things were going to turn out in your future you would probably have changed a lot of things that you did the book of Revelation gives us this opportunity like any good textbook all the answers are in the back the key to unlocking your future is written in the words of Jesus through his servant John now if that’s not a blessing I don’t know what is there are 7 Beatitudes blessings found throughout the book of Revelation blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy and heed the things which are written in it for the time is near 1/3 write blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on 14 13 behold I am coming like a thief blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes 16 15 blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb 19 9 blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection 26 and behold I am coming quickly blessed is he who he’s the words of the prophecy of this book 22 7 and blessed are those who wash their robes revelation 1 for John to the seven churches that are in Asia grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come and from the seven spirits who are before his throne the first part of the book deals with the seven churches now there were more than seven churches but these churches were specifically chosen because they represent the history of the church the Church of that day the church as it went through different periods and the church as it was to come basically these seven churches represent the history the church from beginning to end but if they were listed in any other order they would not fit the seven spirits which are before the throne of God are the Sevenfold powers of the Holy Spirit we find this in the Book of Isaiah and the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him the spirit of wisdom and understanding the spirit of counsel and might the spirit of knowledge and a fear of the Lord Isaiah the Holy Spirit ministers to us with wisdom understanding counsel might knowledge and fear of the Lord seven is God’s number for completeness seven days in a week seven colors in a rainbow seven notes in the music scale etc the number seven is also the most common in Biblical prophecy occurring 42 times in Daniel and revelation alone in Revelation there are seven churches seven spirits seven golden candlesticks seven stars seven lamps seven seals seven horns seven eyes seven angels seven trumpets seven thunders seven thousand slain in a great earthquake seven heads seven Crown’s seven last plagues seven golden miles seven mountains and seven kings revelation and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness the firstborn of the dead and the ruler of the kings of the earth to him who loves us and releases from our sins by his blood john confirms that jesus christ is the author of the book of Revelation faithful witness the word witness is the greek word martyrs and is the word from which we get our word martyr which has come to mean one who dies for his faith but originally the idea is one who has a faith so strong that he would die for it so Jesus is the faithful witness what does that mean he is the faithful witness of what God is firstborn refers to Jesus being first in importance or prominence not first and time to be raised from the dead he has to be the most important person in our lives he is our king of kings and Lord of lords only Jesus loved us enough to die for us that through his blood our sins have been washed away once and forever if we believe in him revelation and he has made us to be a kingdom priests to his God and Father to him be the glory and the Dominion for ever and ever amen believers will reign with Christ in the kingdom age to come revelation behold he is coming with the clouds and every eye will see him even those who pierced him and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over him so it is to be amen what an awesome sight just imagine looking up to the clouds and seeing the return of Jesus Christ no longer is Jesus the lowly servant the humble Shepherd or the rejected prophet but rightfully he is returning as the king of kings and the Lord of lords and the whole world will know it every all will see him no one will miss this event even those who pierced him shall take part in this event the whole earth will mourn when they realize what humanity did to Jesus I believe that he will still bear the scars that he suffered on the cross that we would be reminded throughout eternity revelation I’m the Alpha and the Omega says the Lord God who is and who was and who is to come the Almighty Jesus is the first and the last he was there in the beginning during creation and he will be there in the end at the second coming he always was always is and always will be revelation I John your brother and fellow partaker in the tribulation and Kingdom and perseverance which are in Jesus was on the island called Patmos because of the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus John was imprisoned on the island of Patmos a modern-day version of Alcatraz he was in prison for preaching and teaching the Word of God he was sharing the testimony of Jesus Christ the way this world is today many of us could end up the same way just mention the name of Jesus and see what kind of looks you get the word God is just too big but mention Jesus and almost everyone knows who you’re talking about next time someone sneezes try saying Jesus bless you instead of God bless you see what kind of reaction you get under cover Christian or faithful servant if the police suddenly showed up at your front door and said they needed to search your home would there be enough evidence in your life to prove that your follower of Jesus Christ revelation I was in the spirit on the Lord’s Day and I heard behind me a loud voice like the sound of a trumpet john was more than just tuned in to the Holy Spirit this was a special anointing he was picked as a deliverer of a special message from the Almighty Lord Himself I believe as a of a trumpet means the voice was loud and clear it would be like someone speaking through a megaphone just a few feet away revelation 111 saying write in a book what you see and send it to the seven churches to Ephesus and the Smyrna and the Pergamum and to theater and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea John is commanded to write down what he sees and send it to the seven Pacific churches the Lord has instructed as mentioned earlier there are a lot more than seven churches but these seven churches represented the history of the church as well as the life of the believer and much more as we will learn revelation 1 2 through 115 then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me and having turned I saw seven golden lampstands and in the middle of the lampstands I saw one like a son of man clothed in a robe reaching to his feet and girded across his chest with a golden sash his head and his hair were white like wool like snow and his eyes were like a flame of fire his feet were like burnished bronze when it has been made to glow in a furnace and his voice was like the sound of many waters there are seven golden lampstands one for each of the seven churches who is the light of the world Jesus the purpose of the church is to be a light in this world of darkness what is the source of light for the church to shine the teaching of the word of Jesus Christ how bright does your church shine so who is in the midst of the seven churches Jesus here with the only description of Jesus in the New Testament Jesus in all his glory is described clothed with a robe fit for a king clear down to his feet showing righteousness and honor a golden breastplate or girdle across his chest with the names of his people engraved ready to fulfill his role as a redeemer his hair as white as snow pure and tried as the Ancient of Days his flaming penetrating eyes that pierced even the hardest of hearts his feet sturdy and strong his voice commanding full of knowledge and wisdom revelation in his right hand he held seven stars and out of his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword and his face was like the sun shining in it during his right hand the hand of righteousness held seven stars the seven stars represent the leaders or leadership of the seven churches this could even mean the Angels that God uses to watch over and is assigned to each church revelation the word of the Lord is a two-edged sword it can wound and heal at the same time the word of the Lord spoke the world into creation and the word of the Lord will defeat the forces of the Antichrist and slay his armies his strength is so pure and holy that we can’t look upon him with our earthly eyes it’s like trying to stare at the Sun on a hot glaring day you can only do it for a few seconds and then you have to turn away revelation 1 17 through 19 when I saw him I fell at his feet like a dead man and he placed his right hand on me saying do not be afraid I’m the first and the last and the living one and I was dead and behold I am Alive for evermore and I have the keys of death and of Hades therefore write the things which you have seen and the things which are and the things which will take place after these things John collapsed at the feet of Jesus being in the presence of the Most Holy full of glory and power no mortal man could stay on his feet it has been nearly 60 years since John had seen those nail-scarred hands of his Savior but Jesus being full of mercy and grace picks him up saying do not fear it’s I Jesus this was the same Jesus that lived and then died upon that cross only to be raised forevermore do not fear for I am the only one that has the keys of hell and death don’t worry just write down the things which I’m going to show to you Jesus holds the key to setting you free so Jesus descended into hell and preached to the souls that were in prison and when he ascended he led those captives from their captivity for he had the keys of death and hell and he wants to set you free too Jesus commanded John to write the things which you have seen the things passed things which are the things that were present at that time and the things which shall take place after these things the things in the future this can also be used for an outline for the entire book of Revelation pass would be chapter 1 the present were chapters 2 through 3 and the future chapters 4 through 22 the words hereafter are a translation of the Greek words meta autos which literally means after these things so you have John writing that which he saw he will be writing in chapters 2 and 3 the things which are during this present age the things of the church and then as you begin in chapter 4 he’s going to write of the things that transpire after the things of the church the things that will be Hereafter or more literally after these things so it is significant that you need to watch for it chapter 4 begins with Greek words meta autos after these things I saw a door open in heaven and the first voice was as of trumpet saying unto me come up hither and I will show you things which must be again the repetition of the Greek words meta autos after these things so you enter into the third section of the book when you get to chapter 4 so you get into the future aspects of the book we are now living in the eras of chapters 2 and 3 the things which are the church continues to exist and the testimony and the witness of the church and the witness of Jesus concerning his church which is even more important so there are three divisions of the book it is important that you catch this because if you don’t you’re going to have a constantly confused and garbled view of the future you will see the church in the midst of the tribulation and the 144,000 will try to twist to be the church there are all kinds of twisted and exaggerated concepts that have come from the book of Revelation because people did not catch the key in the first chapter here revelation as for the mystery of the Seven Stars which you saw in my right hand and the Seven golden lampstands the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches and the seven lampstands are the seven churches Jesus reveals to us the mystery of the Seven Stars and the seven golden lampstands the stars represent the seven angels of the seven churches and the seven golden lampstands are the seven churches no guessing just the facts Jesus wants us to know what he has in store for us and the church he wants us to be informed take comfort I don’t know of anything more comforting than to realize that our fate rests in the able hands of Jesus Christ not any person not any church just Jesus either you live all for God or you don’t live for God at all…..
