Revelation Chapter 9:6

Revelation 9:6 – In those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them.

“Seek death, and shall not find it”: The tormented will find no relief. Even their unimaginable attempts to end their misery in suicide will be unsuccessful.

Death would be a welcome relief to all this suffering. These forces of evil turned loose (unrestrained), upon the earth, whether physical or spiritual, will be so terrible that men will beg to die but will be unable to during this punishment.

This was the first of the three Woes!

Verses 7-10: The description of the “locusts” indicates that they are demons who are given physical forms in order to manifest their destruction and torment. “Horses” show their warlike character. Their “crowns” depict them as conquerors. Human “faces” show intelligence. Their feminine “hair” perhaps makes them seductive and attractive. The “teeth … of lions” shows them to be destructive and hurtful. “Breastplates of iron” make them indestructible. “Wings” symbolize swiftness. The “stings” in their “tails” give them the “power” to “hurt”. Fortunately for mankind, their period of torment is limited to “five months”. But the next judgment is even worse

As pointed out in the last section, the tormenting locusts will literally bring Hell on Earth’s inhabitants. In Hell, there is no peace or finality as some picture death; the consciousness of the lost continues on for eternity in torment:

Isaiah 66:24 – “And they shall go forth and look upon the corpses of the men who have transgressed against Me. For their worm does not die, and their fire is not quenched. They shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”

Luke 16:23-24 – And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.'”

Revelation 14:9-11 – Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”

In reality, God is merciful to give the inhabitants of Earth five months of Hell to experience so that they might repent and not be tormented for eternity. Note that the locusts are not given authority to kill men (Revelation 9:5); only to torment them. Satan was similarly restricted when God allowed him to take away Job’s possessions and torment Job with boils, but Satan was not allowed to take Job’s life:

Job 2:3-7 – Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil? And still he holds fast to his integrity, although you incited Me against him, to destroy him without cause.” So Satan answered the LORD and said, “Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life. But stretch out Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will surely curse You to Your face!” And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand, but spare his life.” So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.

Job felt tormented to the point that he desired release in death like those in torment from the locust horde:

Job 3:16-22 – Or why was I not hidden like a stillborn child, like infants who never saw light? There the wicked cease from troubling, and there the weary are at rest. There the prisoners rest together; they do not hear the voice of the oppressor. The small and great are there, and the servant is free from his master. “Why is light given to him who is in misery, and life to the bitter of soul, who long for death, but it does not come, and search for it more than hidden treasures; who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad when they can find the grave?”

Job would have found release in death, being righteous, but he did not attempt to take his own life, as he feared God and submitted his life to Him:

Job 6:2-4, 8-9 – Oh, that my grief were fully weighed, and my calamity laid with it on the scales! For then it would be heavier than the sand of the sea – therefore my words have been rash. For the arrows of the Almighty are within me; my spirit drinks in their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me…. Oh, that I might have my request, that God would grant me the thing that I long for! That it would please God to crush me, that He would loose His hand and cut me off!

In contrast, Judas Iscariot rejected God and sought escape through suicide from the torment of his guilt for betraying Jesus:

Matthew 27:1-5 – When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death. And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor. Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!” Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself.

For Judas, release from death was a deception, as he went to eternal torment in perdition:

John 17:12 – While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

John 6:64-71 – But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him. And He said, “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.” From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?” He spoke of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for it was he who would betray Him, being one of the twelve.

Judas was remorseful and felt sorry for himself, but he wasn’t repentant. Likewise, after the next Trumpet judgment, which is more horrific than the tormenting locusts, men continue in defiance against God, refusing to repent:

Revelation 9:20-21 – But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.

It seems that even a taste of Hell on Earth will not move most to repent and turn to God, but God in His mercy gives them five months to do so, making death impossible for them. Many will die in the next judgment, only to find themselves in eternal torment with no means of the escape they sought while being tormented by the locusts on earth.
