Revelation Chapter 8:9

Revelation 8:9 – And a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

Creation suffers in God’s judgment against man (Romans 8:20). Even the fish of the sea get consumed during times of judgment:

Hosea 4:1-3 – Hear the word of the LORD, you children of Israel, for the LORD brings a charge against the inhabitants of the land: “There is no truth or mercy or knowledge of God in the land. By swearing and lying, killing and stealing and committing adultery, they break all restraint, with bloodshed upon bloodshed. Therefore the land will mourn; and everyone who dwells there will waste away with the beasts of the field and the birds of the air; even the fish of the sea will be taken away.”

Zephaniah 1:2-7 – “I will utterly consume everything from the face of the land,” Says the LORD; “I will consume man and beast; I will consume the birds of the heavens, the fish of the sea, and the stumbling blocks along with the wicked. I will cut off man from the face of the land,” Says the LORD. “I will stretch out My hand against Judah, and against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem. I will cut off every trace of Baal from this place, the names of the idolatrous priests with the pagan priests – those who worship the host of heaven on the housetops; those who worship and swear oaths by the LORD, but who also swear by Milcom; those who have turned back from following the LORD, and have not sought the LORD, nor inquired of Him.” Be silent in the presence of the Lord GOD; for the day of the LORD is at hand, for the LORD has prepared a sacrifice; He has invited His guests.”

The death of the sea creatures will not only affect the food supply, but will also affect commerce when the burning mountain destroys a third of the ships. Ships have been the standard for trading merchandise for millennia:

Isaiah 60:9 – Surely the coastlands shall wait for Me; and the ships of Tarshish will come first, to bring your sons from afar, their silver and their gold with them, to the name of the LORD your God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because He has glorified you.

Ezekiel 27:9, 25 – Elders of Gebal and its wise men were in you to caulk your seams; all the ships of the sea and their oarsmen were in you to market your merchandise…. The ships of Tarshish were carriers of your merchandise. You were filled and very glorious in the midst of the seas.

Ships can also show the military might of a nation:

Daniel 11:40 – At the time of the end the king of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through.

When God destroys ships in judgment, it humbles those who are confident in their own power and wealth:

Isaiah 2:12-17 – For the day of the LORD of hosts shall come upon everything proud and lofty, upon everything lifted up – and it shall be brought low – upon all the cedars of Lebanon that are high and lifted up, and upon all the oaks of Bashan; upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up; upon every high tower, and upon every fortified wall; upon all the ships of Tarshish, and upon all the beautiful sloops. The loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be brought low; the LORD alone will be exalted in that day…

Isaiah 23:14 – Wail, you ships of Tarshish! For your strength is laid waste.

Revelation 18:19 – They threw dust on their heads and cried out, weeping and wailing, and saying, ‘Alas, alas, that great city, in which all who had ships on the sea became rich by her wealth! For in one hour she is made desolate.’

If the heavenly body that looks like a burning mountain affects a third of the oceans, and not just a third of the Mediterranean Sea, it would surely be enormous, affecting not only ships and sea creatures, but would also certainly devastate the coastlines too in the tsunami it would generate on impact

The effect was as if one-third of all the fish in the sea were cut off. Of course, this is not to be taken literally. It is designed to describe an effect, pertaining to the maritime portion of the world, as if a third portion of all that was in the sea should perish. The natural interpretation would be to apply it to some invasion or calamity pertaining to the sea, to the islands, to the maritime regions, or to commerce. If the whole description pertains to the Roman empire, then this might be supposed to have particular reference to something that would have a bearing on the maritime parts of that empire.

“And the third part of the ships were destroyed”: This also pertains to the same general calamity, affecting the commerce of the empire. The destruction of the “ships” was produced, in some way, by casting the mountain into the sea, either by their being consumed by the contact with the burning mass, or by being sunk by the agitation of the waters. The essential idea is, that the calamity would be of such a nature as would produce the destruction of vessels at sea, either naval armaments, or ships of commerce.

Verses 10-11: The “third” trumpet makes a “third” of all fresh “water bitter”, resulting in widespread thirst and death. “Wormwood (Greek apsinthos, literally “undrinkable”), was a bitter herb (compare Deut. 29:18; Prov. 5:4), that would make the water of the earth unfit for human consumption.
