Revelation Chapter 7: 16
Revelation 7:16 – They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat…
On the earth, the multitude experiences hunger, thirst, and heat. This is what befalls those who live on earth during the Tribulation in several of the judgments:
|Hunger||3rd Seal – Famine (Revelation 6:5-6)
4th Seal – Hunger (Revelation 6:7-8)
2nd Trumpet – Third of sea life dies (Revelation 8:8-9)
2nd Bowl – All of sea life dies (Revelation 16:3)
|Thirst||3rd Trumpet – Third of rivers and streams turn bitter (Revelation 8:10-11)
3rd Bowl – All of the rivers and streams turn to blood (Revelation 16:4-6)
|Sun||4th Bowl – Men scorched by the sun (Revelation 16:8-9)|
|Heat||6th Trumpet – death by fire and brimstone (Revelation 9:14-21)
4th Bowl – Men scorched with heat (Revelation 16:8-9)
The Church is promised to be spared the wrath of the Tribulation (1 Thessalonians 1:10, 5:9), but there is nothing in Scripture that shows Tribulation saints having any supernatural protection like the 144,000 servants and the two witnesses. The Jewish remnant that flees to the wilderness is only protected in the second half of the Tribulation. In fact, this passage of discussion indicates that Tribulation saints do suffer in some of these judgments. That being said, the last three Trumpet judgments, with the last Trumpet including all the Bowl judgments is for those who inhabit the earth:
Revelation 8:13 – And I looked, and I heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, “Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the three angels who are about to sound!”
The Greek word for “inhabitants” mean “those who dwell.” Recall from Revelation 6:10, that the “earth dwellers” are unbelievers who murder the saints. Therefore, it is possible that the Tribulation saints are protected from the worst of the judgments. However, as shown earlier, some of the saints that die in the Tribulation suffer from heat and the sun. The only judgments that involve suffering from heat and the sun is the sixth Trumpet and fourth Bowl judgments, which suggest the saints are not spared from these particular judgments.
The Millennial Kingdom will be a time where no one will suffer from hunger, thirst, heat, or the sun. Isaiah looked ahead to this time, when the Messiah would restore Israel, when they would become a light to the Gentiles and help fulfill the needs of the people:
Isaiah 49:6-13 – “Indeed He says, ‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, that You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ” Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, their Holy One, to Him whom man despises, to Him whom the nation abhors, to the Servant of rulers: “Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the LORD who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel; and He has chosen You.” Thus says the LORD: “In an acceptable time I have heard You, and in the day of salvation I have helped You; I will preserve You and give You as a covenant to the people, to restore the earth, to cause them to inherit the desolate heritages; that You may say to the prisoners, ‘Go forth,’ to those who are in darkness, ‘Show yourselves.’ “They shall feed along the roads, and their pastures shall be on all desolate heights. They shall neither hunger nor thirst, neither heat nor sun shall strike them; for He who has mercy on them will lead them, even by the springs of water He will guide them. I will make each of My mountains a road, and My highways shall be elevated. Surely these shall come from afar; Look! Those from the north and the west, and these from the land of Sinim.” Sing, O heavens! Be joyful, O earth! And break out in singing, O mountains! For the LORD has comforted His people, and will have mercy on His afflicted.
Both of these remind us of the 23rd Psalm. Jesus is the Shepherd. He sees to the needs of His flock.
Jesus is the Light, and there will be no need for the sun or the moon. There will be a presence of Light.
Paul recognized that salvation would come to the Gentiles. Notice his quotes below, from the passage above in Isaiah:
Acts 13:46-48 – Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, “It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. For so the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have set you as a light to the Gentiles, that you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ” Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.
2 Corinthians 6:1-2 – We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For He says: “In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in the day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.
Paul evangelized the world in the Church Age. The 144,000 servants of God will evangelize the world in the Tribulation, and Israel as a nation will serve as a light to the Gentiles and evangelize the nations in the Millennium.
In all dispensations, the Lord spiritually provides and protects His people, filling the hungry soul, giving water that springs up into everlasting life, and gives refuge from the elements and from distress:
Psalms 107:8-9 – Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness.
John 4:13-14 – Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
John 6:35 – And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.
Matthew 5:6 – Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.
Isaiah 4:4-6 – When the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and purged the blood of Jerusalem from her midst, by the spirit of judgment and by the spirit of burning, then the LORD will create above every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and above her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day and the shining of a flaming fire by night. For over all the glory there will be a covering. And there will be a tabernacle for shade in the daytime from the heat, for a place of refuge, and for a shelter from storm and rain.
