Revelation Chapter 5:4
Revelation 5:4 – So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open and read the scroll, or to look at it.
Job recognized the need for a redeemer, who could reverse the death that has plagued man since Adam:
Job 19:25-27 – For I know that my Redeemer lives, and He shall stand at last on the earth; and after my skin is destroyed, this I know, that in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!
For Job, his hope in the Redeemer was all that he had. Paul shows us that those who have no hope have nothing but sorrow:
1 Thessalonians 4:13 – But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.
John was weeping because it appeared that there was no one worthy to open the scroll, let alone read it. He understood what was at stake for the earth and the creation. Without a worthy kinsman redeemer, there is no hope. If the creation is not reconciled and restored, the passages below show that God’s creation was in vain, and God’s sovereignty (preeminence) would be forfeited. In other words, a lot is at stake in the creation’s redemption!
Isaiah 45:18 – For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens, who is God, who formed the earth and made it, who has established it, who did not create it in vain, who formed it to be inhabited: ” I am the LORD, and there is no other.”
Colossians 1:16-20 – For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven….
John began to cry because it seemed that there was no one to open this book. In fact, these unworthy men were even kept from looking at the book.
Verses 5-7: Christ is presented both as a “Lion” (Ruler), from the “tribe of Judah” (compare Gen. 49:10), and as a “Lamb” (Redeemer; compare Isa. 53:7; John 1:29). The “Root of David” shows a messianic connection with the Davidic covenant (compare 2 Sam. 7:16; Isa. 11:1), and Christ’s right to the throne of Israel. The vision of Christ here brings together the twofold aspect of His first and second comings, His work as Savior and as Sovereign. Christ has the right to judge, possess, and rule the earth because of His submission to the death of the Cross (compare Phil. 2:8-11).
