Revelation Chapter 5: 12
Revelation 5:12 – [I heard the voice of many angels…] saying with a loud voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing!”
The angels join the elders and living creatures in worship of the Lord. It appears that they are shouting out to the Lord in praise, but not in song. In fact, there is little evidence in Scripture that indicates angels sing at all. The following is the only passage in Scripture that says the “sons of God,” or angels “sang”:
Job 38:4-7 – Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
However, the Hebrew word translated “sang” does not specifically mean singing and can also mean to cry, rejoice, or shout for joy (source). If angels don’t sing, perhaps the ability to sing is a special gift God gives to the redeemed and their celestial representatives.
Like the elders and living creatures, the angels acknowledge that Jesus is worthy because of His sacrifice as the “Lamb who was slain.” He is also worthy to receive seven things:
|Jesus is worthy to receive…||Greek||Definition|
|1||Power||Dunamis||Ability, possession of command|
|5||Honor||Timé||Give worth or pay respect to|
|7||Blessing||Eulogia||Praise, give a good word|
This is the only passage that lists these seven items together. The passages below, each containing several of these things, further explain why the Lord is worthy to receive them.
The Lord is worthy to receive these things because He created all things:
Revelation 4:11 – “You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created.”
All things come from the Lord, therefore they are rightfully His:
1 Chronicles 29:10-13 – Therefore David blessed the LORD before all the assembly; and David said: “Blessed are You, LORD God of Israel, our Father, forever and ever. Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, the power and the glory, the victory and the majesty; for all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and You are exalted as head over all. Both riches and honor come from You, and You reign over all. In Your hand is power and might; in Your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. “Now therefore, our God, we thank You and praise Your glorious name.”
As already noted, the “Lamb that was slain” is worthy of these things because He made salvation possible through His sacrifice:
Revelation 7:10-12 – “…Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” All the angels stood around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures, and fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying: “Amen! Blessing andglory and wisdom, thanksgiving and honor and power and might, be to our God forever and ever. Amen.”
“Power … blessing”: This doxology records 7 qualities intrinsic to God and to the Lamb that demand our praise.
The interesting thing here is that this huge gathering was all saying the same thing. It was total adoration and recognition of Jesus of who and what He was. Not that they could give Jesus anything, but they realized that it was correct for Him to possess all things.
