Revelation Chapter 3:4
Revelation 3:4 “Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.”
“In white”: The white garments of all the redeemed (compare 6:11; 7:9, 13; 19:8, 14), speak of holiness and purity. Such white robes are reserved for Christ (Matt. 17:2; Mark 9:3), holy angels (Matt. 28:3; Mark 16:5), and the glorified church (19:8, 14). In the ancient world, white robes were commonly worn at festivals and celebrations.
Jesus is saying here there are a few people even in this church of Sardis, or our fallen away church now that are still strong in the Lord. They believe the truth rather than a lie.
A defiled garment is one not washed in the blood of the Lamb. You see, the white that we must wear is a white robe made whiter than snow by being washed in the blood of the Lamb. This is our robe of righteousness that we will wear in heaven. “Righteousness” means in right standing with God.
Most of the churches now that are like this church in Sardis, do not like to preach or teach on the blood of Jesus. It was the shed blood that defeated Satan and purchased our salvation. We read in Hebrews, just how important this shed blood is.
Hebrews 9:22 “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”
You see, if we are not washed in the blood of the Lamb, then we are walking in sin. We will study in a later lesson, in chapter seven of Revelation, about the great number from all nations standing around the throne in their white robes.
Revelation 7:14 “And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, these are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”
To deny the power of the blood, would deny us our right to stand before the throne of God. Do not be deceived. Believe the Word of God, the Bible. Let no one convince you that it is not true.
While Sardis was a church that had apparently made a name for themselves of their own merit, there were a few “names” or members in the church that sought to please the Lord instead; they had not “defiled their garments.” These “few names” were true believers. The next verse tells us that it is the “overcomers,” or believers (1 John 5:4-5), the Lord will clothe in white, which represents cleansing from sin (Revelation 3:5). In other words, most of the members of the church of Sardis were not saved because they were not worthy to wear white as an overcomer.
Jude shows that unbelievers wear defiled garments, as he pleads with believers to share the Gospel with those lost in any way possible – with love for the sinner, but not the sin:
Jude 1:22-23 – And on some have compassion, making a distinction; but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.
The prophet Zechariah explains the defiled garments, where the Lord “plucked from the fire” Joshua the high priest, saving him from eternity in Hell. A change of garments, from defiled into clean, is a picture of the removal of iniquity though the salvation process:
Zechariah 3:1-4 – Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose him. And the LORD said to Satan, “The LORD rebuke you, Satan! The LORD who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?” Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and was standing before the Angel. Then He answered and spoke to those who stood before Him, saying, “Take away the filthy garments from him.” And to him He said, “See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes.”
These heavenly garments are even called “garments of salvation” in Isaiah:
Isaiah 61:10 – I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
Jesus also illustrated in the following parable that a guest must wear the proper garment to enter the wedding in the Kingdom of Heaven:
Matthew 22:2, 8-13 – “The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son….” Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.’ So those servants went out into the highways and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good. And the wedding hall was filled with guests. “But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment. So he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'”
What colour is the proper wedding garment? White of course:
Revelation 19:7-9, 14 – “Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!'” And he said to me, “These are the true sayings of God.” And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.
