Revelation Chapter 11:12

Revelation 11:12 – And they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” And they ascended to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies saw them.

After the world sees the two witnesses rise from the dead, a loud voice calls the witnesses to Heaven in the same way God called John to Heaven earlier in Revelation:

“Ascended up to heaven in a cloud”: Some may wonder why God will not allow them to preach, assuming their message would have more force following their resurrection. But that ignores Christ’s clear statement to the contrary:

Luke 16:31 “And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.”

The Witnesses Resurrected. After the three and a half days, a breath of life from God entered them and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” And they went up to heaven in a cloud.

This “great voice from heaven” that calls to “come up hither” is the Lord’s. It is when the trumpet of redemption blows. Jesus has always been inviting us to come. The outcome of the church is following Jesus in his resurrection. Living forever in the presence of God is the outcome of all true believers after they have run the race and been victorious.

As our Lord was crucified, buried, and in three days rose from the dead, these men, after being slain and exposed to the eyes of the world, will hear the voice of God resurrecting them. A cloud will receive them out of sight in the face of their enemies. It is no wonder that “terror struck those who saw them.” The resurrection of these men will be the final confirmation that they were men of God, another illustration that God does not forget His own.

“Enemies beheld them”: Those who hated and dishonored the two witnesses will watch their vindication.

Revelation 4:1 – After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, “Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this.”

This loud voice which sounded like a trumpet to John is Jesus Christ:

Revelation 1:10-13 – I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet, saying, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,” and, “What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.” Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band.

It is interesting that we find the phrase “come up here” in Proverbs, which shows that a king will humble people who exalt themselves:

Proverbs 25:6-7 – Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king, and do not stand in the place of the great; for it is better that he say to you, “Come up here,” than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince, whom your eyes have seen.

This fits with the “Kingdom of Heaven” message, where those who are humble get exalted:

Luke 14:8-11 – “When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him; and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Jesus will exalt those who humbly come to the Kingdom when He calls them to come:

1 Peter 5:6-7 – Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

Matthew 23:11-12 – But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

Job 36:7 – He does not withdraw His eyes from the righteous; but they are on the throne with kings, for He has seated them forever, and they are exalted.

On the other hand, the Lord will put down and humble those who exalt themselves, including kings, the antichrist, and Satan:

Luke 1:52 – He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted the lowly.

Isaiah 24:21-22 – It shall come to pass in that day that the LORD will punish on high the host of exalted ones, and on the earth the kings of the earth. They will be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and will be shut up in the prison; after many days they will be punished.

2 Thessalonians 2:3-8 – Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming.

Isaiah 14:12-15 – “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’ Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the Pit.”

God also called Moses to come up to the top of the mountain and will call the Church to come up to Heaven in the rapture with a loud trumpet sound, similar to His call to John and the two witnesses:

Exodus 19:19-20 – And when the blast of the trumpet sounded long and became louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by voice. Then the LORD came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain. And the LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 – For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

Interestingly, the two witnesses will go up to Heaven in a cloud like the Church. Jesus also went up to Heaven in a cloud and will return in a cloud:

Acts 1:9-11 – Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

Luke 21:27 – Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

Certainly, the two witnesses will ascend to Heaven in a literal cloud, but as discussed in Revelation 10:1, these clouds also symbolize the glory of God. In Revelation 1:7, we see that Jesus also will come “with” clouds, which represents the heavenly host. Indeed we see chariots of Heaven within clouds or whirlwinds that took Elijah to Heaven:

2 Kings 2:11-12 – Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it, and he cried out, “My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!” So he saw him no more. And he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces.

Clouds, or a whirlwind also surround the vehicle that carries the throne of God:

Ezekiel 1:4, 26-28 – Then I looked, and behold, a whirlwind was coming out of the north, a great cloud with raging fire engulfing itself; and brightness was all around it and radiating out of its midst like the color of amber, out of the midst of the fire….. And above the firmament over their heads was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like a sapphire stone; on the likeness of the throne was a likeness with the appearance of a man high above it. Also from the appearance of His waist and upward I saw, as it were, the color of amber with the appearance of fire all around within it; and from the appearance of His waist and downward I saw, as it were, the appearance of fire with brightness all around. Like the appearance of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the brightness all around it. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. So when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard a voice of One speaking.

Isaiah 66:15 – For behold, the LORD will come with fire and with His chariots, like a whirlwind,to render His anger with fury, and His rebuke with flames of fire.

Psalms 104:3 – He lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters, who makes the cloudsHis chariot, who walks on the wings of the wind….

If the clouds that receive the two witnesses look anything like the whirlwind that received Elijah or the cloud that carries the throne of God, it is no wonder people give glory to God after seeing such an awesome sight!

Elijah and Ezekiel's vision
John tells us that the two witnesses’ enemies see their ascension to Heaven. Since the two witnesses’ enemies are all over the world, as we discussed in Revelation 11:9, most earth dwellers may watch the resurrection and rapture via broadcast through video technology.

On an end note, some believe that the 144,000 Jewish servants will go up to Heaven the same time as the two witnesses. These servants appear in Heaven before the throne of God sometime after the beast takes power in Revelation 13, but before the final harvest of souls and the last judgments come down on earth in Revelation 14:

Revelation 14:1-2 – Then I looked, and behold, a Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His Father’s name written on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of loud thunder. And I heard the sound of harpists playing their harps. They sang as it were a new song before the throne, before the four living creatures, and the elders; and no one could learn that song except the hundred and forty-four thousand who were redeemed from the earth. These are the ones who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These were redeemed from among men, being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb.

The timing certainly fits for the 144,000 Jewish servants to go up to Heaven with the two witnesses, though it is speculative. For a chart on all the various resurrections and raptures before, during, and after the Tribulation click here.
