Revelation Chapter 10:4
Revelation 10:4 – Now when the seven thunders uttered their voices, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, “Seal up the things which the seven thunders uttered, and do not write them.”
John hears what the seven thunders say and apparently understood what they said, because he was about to write what he heard. However, a voice from Heaven tells John not to write what he heard, but to seal them up. As discussed in Revelation 5:1, to “seal” something in the Greek means to close or make it secure.
It seems that John was attempting to write down everything as he saw it. This little book is not for the world to see. That is why Jesus spoke in parables. Only the believers in the Lord Jesus Christ are supposed to understand what is in the Book, and then only through the guidance of the Holy Spirit and Bible study. This message then from these voices is not for the world in general. Jesus, or God the Father, stops John from revealing these things by telling him not to write this down.
Thundering voices must come either from God or something very near Him. The voices that sound like seven thunders are a unique feature in the book of Revelation. John is prepared to write down what these thunder like voices say when he hears another voice telling him to “seal up and not write down what he heard”.
This is the only proclamation in the entire book of Revelation that is sealed up. As for the seventh angel, the mystery of God should be finished I believe when the 7th coming vial judgment trumpet is sounded, is what is being referred to here.
Both Daniel and John were instructed to seal up much of what they saw, reserving the interpretation for the generation to whom it would be obvious: “I was about to write; and I heard a voice from heaven saying, “seal up the things which the seven peals of thunder have spoken, and do not write them.” And then, “But as for you, Daniel, conceal these words and seal up the book until the end of time; many will go back and forth, and knowledge will increase.”
It should be apparent to even the most casual of readers that this is the generation in which knowledge has increased to the level necessary to understand the differences between symbols and substance. This is the generation in which many will experience John’s eyewitness testimony, to their everlasting regret! This is the Generation of End Times.
Verses 5-7: Lifting the “hand” signifies taking an oath (compare Gen. 14:22-23; Dan. 12:7). The announcement of the “angel” is that there will be no more delay in the establishment of the millennial kingdom of Christ. This presumes a present delay or postponement of the promised kingdom (between Christ’s two advents). With the sounding of the “seventh” trumpet (11:15), the present “mystery” form of the kingdom will be over (compare Rom. 11:25), and what God promised to the “prophets” (e.g., Isa. chapter 11, Jer. chapter 31; Ezek. chapters 36 and 37; Dan. chapter 7; Zech. chapter 14; compare Matt. 6:10), will finally be completed.
Daniel wrote down prophecies he heard, but had to seal them up:
Daniel 8:26 – “And the vision of the evenings and mornings which was told is true; therefore seal up the vision, for it refers to many days in the future.”
Daniel 12:4 – “But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”
In Daniel’s case, sealing the book meant that it would not be understood until the time of the end. In contrast, John is not to even write what he heard the seven thunders say, yet the voice from Heaven commanded him to seal them up. This means John could not share with anyone what he had heard; he sealed them in his mind.
While we might learn about the characteristics of the seven voices of the Lord who thunders in Psalm 29, as discussed in the last section, it is pointless to try to even speculate what the voices actually said. That being said, it is interesting that the Psalm ends with reference to judgment of the flood and the Lord’s kingship, which ties right in with Jesus rightfully claiming dominion on the earth shown by the mighty angel planting his feet on the sea and the earth (Revelation 10:2):
Psalms 29:10-11 – The LORD sat enthroned at the Flood, and the LORD sits as King forever. The LORD will give strength to His people; the LORD will bless His people with peace.
Some ask why God would seal what the seven thunders said when God’s purpose for giving the Revelation to John was to reveal who Jesus Christ is and show what will take place in preparation for the Kingdom. The following passages show that God reveals things that are useful to us, but it is His glory to conceal things:
Deuteronomy 29:29 – “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.”
Proverbs 25:2 – It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
Similarly, Daniel had to seal up the prophetic message he wrote down, because it could not be understood until the time of the end. In other words, it was pointless for Daniel to try to understand because he couldn’t understand without living in that time. How could Daniel understand how travel and knowledge would advance in the end times (Daniel 12:4)? It could only be understood by this generation who can fly around the world in a day and have access to a massive amount of knowledge at the click of a mouse.
Seeing this prophecy revealed is useful to gauge the times we live in. Perhaps the seven thunders are only sealed until the time we can understand them like Daniel. I suspect we will all hear and understand what the seven thunders said when this prophecy plays out in real-time.
