Revelation Chapter 10:2

Revelation 10:2 – He had a little book open in his hand.

The mighty angel holds an open book in his hand. An open book is an unsealed book in contrast to a sealed book:

“Little book”: The 7 sealed scroll that is the title deed to the earth (see note on 5:1), will be fully opened and all the final judgments made visible.

The “Little Book” that was seen in heaven (in verse 2), has a similar mission as that given to (Ezekiel 3:1-3 and Jeremiah 15:16). The prophetic Word, which is what the “Little Book” is, contains the “sweet” message of God’s wonderful plan for mankind including the coming of Christ, the Millennium Kingdom, and Heaven, but it also contains the Judgment of God on sinners who do not repent and come to Him, and their ultimate consignment to hell.

Just the fact that it is opened tells us that it is to be revealed to those who will consume it. As believers, we are told to eat this book, just as John was told to eat it. This “little book”, I believe, is the Word of God, the Bible.

The Bible (Word), is alive. When we eat the Bible, it gives us the strength to live victorious lives before Him. Jesus is in dominion over everything. He is our source of power. Studying the Bible is more important to our life than our daily bread. Praise God, the Bible is of no private interpretation. God the Holy Spirit will teach each of us what the Bible is saying to us.

The planting of the feet on the sea and the earth (dry land), shows Christ’s authority over the earth in its entirety, and the appropriation of His promised inheritance as Messiah.

Daniel 12:4 – “But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end….”

Some believe this open book is the scroll that Jesus took in Revelation 5:7 and has since opened its seals revealing the contents inside, which are God’s judgments. However, the book the mighty angel holds is a “biblaridion” or a little book in the Greek, compared to the “biblion” in Revelation 5:1 which is a book or scroll. Indeed, the scroll in Revelation 5:1 is no “little book.” We find in the following parallel passage, this scroll with judgments against the earth and its inhabitants is about 30 feet by 15 feet (20 cubits by 10 cubits):

Zechariah 5:1-3 – Then I turned and raised my eyes, and saw there a flying scroll. And he said to me, “What do you see?” So I answered, “I see a flying scroll. Its length is twenty cubits and its width ten cubits.” Then he said to me, “This is the curse that goes out over the face of the whole earth: ‘Every thief shall be expelled,’ according to this side of the scroll; and, ‘Every perjurer shall be expelled,’ according to that side of it.”

As we will see in Revelation 10:9, the mighty angel commands John to eat the little book. The size of the scroll with God’s judgments against the earth would make it impossible for John to eat. In addition, no one was worthy to open or even look at this larger scroll except Christ (Revelation 5:3), so it doesn’t make sense that John would eat it, especially since it is also the “purchase deed” to the earth, as discussed in Revelation 5:1. It will become clear later in Revelation 10:8 what this little book is, and why John must eat it.

Revelation 10:2 – And he set his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land…

The mighty angel comes down from Heaven and sets his right foot on the sea and left foot on the land. As discussed in Revelation 10:1, this imagery is a symbolic act of putting the earth under subjection, which is a picture of Jesus declaring His authority over the earth (1 Corinthians 15:24-28, Hebrews 2:8). Christ’s physical possession of the earth does not actually occur until God finishes His wrath in the Bowl judgments at the end of the Tribulation, but He proclaims His dominion at the sounding of the seventh Trumpet, before the Bowl judgments (Revelation 11:15).

Recall from Revelation 1:16, that the right hand can symbolize favor, strength, protection, or salvation. In the tabernacle, God favored the right side in consecrating priests:

Leviticus 8:22-27 – And he brought the second ram, the ram of consecration. Then Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram, and Moses killed it. Also he took some of its blood and put it on the tip of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. Then he brought Aaron’s sons. And Moses put some of the blood on the tips of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet. And Moses sprinkled the blood all around on the altar. Then he took the fat and the fat tail, all the fat that was on the entrails, the fatty lobe attached to the liver, the two kidneys and their fat, and the right thigh; and from the basket of unleavened bread that was before the LORD he took one unleavened cake, a cake of bread anointed with oil, and one wafer, and put them on the fat and on the right thigh; and he put all these in Aaron’s hands and in his sons’ hands, and waved them as a wave offering before the LORD.

This may suggest that the mighty angel setting his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land has some significance. Recall from Revelation 7:3, the sea can metaphorically represent the Gentile nations and the land can represent Israel. Interestingly, the beast, also known as the antichrist, comes out the sea, or Gentile nations:

Revelation 13:1-2 – Then I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast rising up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a blasphemous name. Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority.

The beast gets his power from the dragon who is Satan, the serpent who deceived Eve:

Revelation 12:9 – So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

The first prophecy in Scripture promises that the coming Messiah would bruise the serpent’s head with His foot:

Genesis 3:15 – “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.”

Paul also shows that God will crush Satan under the feet of His saints:

Romans 16:20 – And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

Similarly, David declared triumph over his enemies in that they were fallen under his feet:

2 Samuel 22:39 – And I have destroyed them and wounded them, so that they could not rise; they have fallen under my feet.

In other words, the mighty angel placing the right foot in the sea may show authority and strength over the Gentile nations, and defeat of Satan and the beast, ending their rule and dominion over the earth. Whether or not the right foot on the sea is significant, Jesus does in fact defeat Satan and take the kingdoms of the world as His own, which supports the notion that the mighty angel is the Lord:

Revelation 11:15 – Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!”
