Revelation Chapter 1 – Verse by Verse Commentary with Pastor D

Hello guys I’m pastor D this is n times news and this is the beginning of a commentary series on the book of Revelation and I want us to begin with a word of Prayer before we open the word together father we thank you Lord God that your word is living and it is active and you have not given us this world that this word that it would confuse us and baffle us you have given it to us that we may by it live that we may understand it so our ask Lord as we open your word and as we try to look into the depths of the book of Revelation Lord God that you truly would reveal your son Jesus to us we thank you Lord God that your word is living in his activity sharper than any two-edged sword and it is the power unto salvation we pray that your spirit would guide us as we study your word together in Jesus name Amen okay well first of all let me just clarify I don’t claim to be a great theologian and I don’t claim to have uncovered some hidden secrets and hidden depths of Revelation that other people are not teaching in fact if you are looking for deep theology probably this video will be a waste of your time I want to just look at verse by verse each video will be one chapter I believe that we complicate revelation so much and we believe we come at it we look at it with the expectation of not understanding what it’s saying but the fact that the very title of the book revelation and revelation literally it is from the Greek word apocalypsis apocalypse and it means the unveiling it means the disclosing it actually means the unveiling of that which was hidden being brought into plain sight so it shouldn’t be that we are so baffled and confused by this book that we put it to one side we choose not to preach from it we think we can’t understand it and I believe that we should just look at it the Bible says what it means and it means what it says so just look at it at the surface and we will soon be able to understand and the book of so let’s begin chapter one from verse one please if you haven’t got your own Bible with you then pause this video go and get your Bible it is useless just listening to somebody else opening a word and you’re not seen for yourself you’re not seen for yourself that what I’m saying is correct I’m not going to put the notes up with the words I want you to look at your own Bible you don’t need to be looking at my face look at your own Bible so that you can highlight you can take notes and you can see in your own word what the Spirit of God is saying to us so from verse one the revelation of Jesus Christ which God gave him to suck to show his servants things which must shortly take place and he sent and signified it by his angel to his servant John okay a few points to pull out there the revelation of Jesus Christ in the revelation as we just explained is the apocalypse the unveiling the the the unveiling was the other word I was looking for the revealing of so this book reveals Jesus Christ we have seen accounts and read accounts of him as a child of his ministry of his gospel of his story through the Gospels of his death and his resurrection and here in the book of Revelation John gets a glimpse of Jesus as he is now in heaven seated in heavenly places so this is the unveiling of the Jesus that we shall see this is the unveiling of the Jesus that shall return so it’s the revelation of Jesus Christ which God gave him to show his servants at you if you’re saved if you’re going to be saved to show the church so this message is for the church he’s not intentionally going to give us a revelation that we cannot understand the fact that the verse 1 of chapter 1 says to us this unveiling of who Jesus Christ is and who we are going to see and it is for you for the church to show his servants things which must shortly take place well this book was written in a somewhere between 70 and 95 AD between 40 and 65 years after Jesus ascended and now as I make this video it’s the Year 2015 so did these things shortly take place well the translation of that word in Greek shortly could mean quickly shortly or swiftly so I understand this to mean that these things will quickly take place that they will come upon us as other scriptures say like a thief in the night if we’re not watching and we need to be watching it’s why this was given this book was given to us that it will not come upon us like a thief in the night but we will be watching and it will not come upon us swiftly without us first seeing I believe when he returns we will be expecting of course we will not know the day or the hour and we’ll look into that as time goes on through this study so hits here to show his servants things which must shortly take place and he sent us God sent this and he signified it that means he revealed it he delivered it by his angel to his servant John let’s pause there why John why did John write this why was John given the privilege of seeing a revealed Jesus Christ as he is in heaven and writing the book of Revelation all the things pertaining to the end well there’s a couple of reasons for that firstly John was a very dear disciple to Jesus Christ in the Gospel of John his other book one of his other books he referred to himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved the account of them the Lord supper says that his he lent his his head on the breast of our Lord he was close he was an eyewitness to everything Jesus had done and said in his in his three years of ministry John had gone around with him and went job if we read in the Gospels we see Jesus speaking about the things pertaining to the end times talking about the temple being destroyed and resurrected or being built back in three days the phone his own body and then in Matthew Mark and Luke all of the accounts of Jesus giving the list of events that will happen at the end John was an eyewitness of all of this so it is poignant it is important that it is John who or one of the disciples who brought this revelation to Jesus Christ a man he personally knew a man who he personally when he saw this vision of Jesus recognized him as a person he had seen and has spent three years with so why not Peter why not one of the other disciples well because by then they were all dead John wrote this vision while he was in prison in an open prison on the island of Patmos exiled and he had according to early church history there had been an assassination attempt on his life they had tried to cook him in boiling oil in a cauldron of boiling oil and the Lord delivered him from that and all of the other eleven disciples as well as most of the other Saints and brother of the Lord had all been either crucified or beheaded or dragged apart by wild horses and all of these hideous sort of deaths stoned to death speared to death many of them and John is as far as we know one of vista the soul what is certainly the sole remaining eyewitness a disciple of Jesus Christ so if s one finishes he sent and signified it by his angel in a vision to his servant John John who bore witness of the word of God and that’s what I was just saying he bore witness of the word of God he literally the Gospel message that we read John was an eyewitness to every single event that took place and he was a witness verse two to the testimony of Jesus Christ he heard all the words of Jesus in fact some of the things Jesus said in the Gospels the reason he said them is because John himself asked them John was involved in conversation with Jesus Christ they had a close bond a close friendship he bore witness to the Word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ to all the things that he saw blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy prophecy is the declaring of the word of God the declaration of what God is saying and in this case of what he is saying concerning future events blessed is he who reads so we are blessed just by reading because it is true and if we are prayerful and if we are open to it the Spirit of God will reveal to us the truth of this word as we go on blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy and keep those things which are written therein for the time is near so you can both be blessed by reading and hearing and also you can be a blessed because once you know this and you declare it to your family and to your friends and to your classmates in to your colleagues and to your neighbors you will be somebody who is able to cause them also to be blessed amen and keeps those things which are written therein so this is not just information for us to write a list of things that we are going to see happen before the Lord returns now this is an instruction manual for us to watch for us to look out for the signs for us to be obedient to the advice that the Spirit of God gives us through the word of John which is the Word of God blessed is he who hears those things and keeps those things which are written therein for the time is near and if it was near then it is most certainly near now verse 4 John he’s now writing with his own hand to seven churches John to the seven churches which are in Asia well there is much debate in the church as to what these seven churches we won’t be looking at them in detail today because they’re in the following two chapters but he writes seven letters to seven churches many people teach you it’s talking about the church age seven different ages of the church many people will teach you that it’s talking about the seven conditions of the church and there may be some truth we can Ross and truth and out of both of those theories and out of both of those possibilities uncertainly weed today must learn and the spread of God speaks to us through letters that were written to an individual or into a church thousands of years ago however it is clear that originally when Luke written these seven letters were written to seven actual churches and Jesus himself tells John which churches he is to write to and what he is to write to each church John to the seven churches which are in Asia actually they’re all in modern-day the country of Turkey grace to you and peace from him who was and who is and who is to come he’s saying greetings to you peace Shalom being the traditional Jewish greeting and grace being the traditional Greek greeting he’s writing this to the Jewish believers and also in Turkey and also to the Gentile believers in Turkey grace and peace in other words this letter is to us all we can all learn from it grace and peace to you from him who was and who is and who is to come and from whom the seven spirits who are before his throne and from the seven spirits who are before his throne now who are the seven spirits this is a problem verse for many people they wonder who are these seven spirits are there seven spirits mentioned in the Bible is this talking of the Holy Spirit I believe it’s important that we never form a doctrine on one verse we can see that any teacher any doctoring doctor means teaching any teaching in the Bible it must be consistent throughout the Word of God so we have to look for another scripture which talks about seven spirits there were certainly not seven holy spirits there is one and he is a part of a Trinity he is God we have no other place in the Bible where talks about other spirits from God unless referring to angels or referring to evil spirits so I will refer to Isaiah chapter 11 verse two when he is talking the Word of God through Isaiah talks about the Spirit of God descending um and it says here the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him and the king and the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him the spirit of wisdom and understanding the spirit of counsel and might the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord let us just count those there this is the Holy Spirit resting in this prophecy the Holy Spirit coming to rest the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him the spirit of wisdom and of understanding the spirit of counsel and might the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord seven seven spirits it’s it’s talking of the attributions the functions of the Holy Spirit the seven spirits in revelation 1 verse 5 sorry verse 4 grace to you and peace from him and wise new isn’t it is to come from the seven spirits that’s the Holy Spirit in his full revealed work who are before the throne and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness the firstborn from the dead talking of his resurrection the ruler over the kings of the earth talking of the power and authority that has been given to him as he said in Matthew to him who loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood so it’s saying here that this message is a message from God involving God the Father God the Son God the Holy Spirit all of the parts of the Trinity um they are Co existent they are Co eternal they are interdependent there they are not three gods as the Muslims believe that we have they are one God in Father Son and Holy Spirit verse 6 and he has made us kings and priests to his God and Father to him be glory and Dominion for ever and ever or 1 Peter chapter 2 verse 9 tells us that we are a royal priesthood a holy nation his own special or chosen people that we should declare the proclaim the praises of him who has called us out of darkness and translated into his glorious and marvelous light so it’s saying here that he has made us to be those who rule Kings and those who are priests a priest is somebody who is able to minister unto the Lord somebody who is able to go about the Lord’s work we don’t have to just look to pass the D we don’t have to just look to our pastors or our priests we don’t have to just look to our kings we ourselves after rule and we ourselves are to do the work of God as led by the Holy Spirit not that in the flesh we can do anything but as the Holy Spirit enables us and equips us and revealed to us God’s will we are the ones we are the Church of Jesus Christ through whom he will pour out his power and his might and through whom He will reveal himself to others as well verse 7 behold Jesus he is coming with the clouds and every eye will see him even those who pierced him and all of the tribes of the earth will mourn because of him even so are men so verse 7 says behold Jesus is coming with the clouds other scripture says said when the disciples were looking after Jesus was ascended and the angel said to them why do you look the same Jesus who you saw ascend in like manner he will return he was caught up with the clouds and the Bible says that in verse 7 that he shall descend he shall come with the clouds and every eye shall see him now it is impossible for us to know how that will take place way exactly in the sky would he be able to be for the entire world population to be able to see him will he do some tour of the planet will it be broadcast on God TV that was a joke by the way who knows we don’t know God is bigger than space and tiny is not limited by our understanding of how he could reveal himself to us what we do know is that on the day that the trumpet sounds on the day that the clouds roll back Jesus will appear on every single eye the eyes of you the eyes of me the eyes of those who are dead in Christ the eyes of every and every bird and every insect shall look up and shall see Jesus Christ return and the tribes of the earth will mourn also because of him why were they mourn it will be too late for them if you don’t know if you’re saved you need to you need to make sure that you’re saying please look through my other videos there’s one recorded around September November 2014 who are you saved and it will explain to you the plan of salvation because if you are if you leave it too late either before you in either when you die or when Jesus returns it’s going to be too late if they will mourn because of him because he has come it will mourn even so John says amen amen means let it be so it literally means ain’t that the truth that is the truth then we have quote from Jesus and he himself said I am this is the first thing Jesus says in Revelation it’s got to be important he said I am the Alpha and the Omega I am the beginning and the end in other words it is all about me Jesus was there at the point of creation the beginning was the word and the Word was God the Word was with God the Word was God all things were made through it I am the Alpha and I am the Omega he is the one that will come to judge at the end he’s the one that will close the book he is the one that said it is finished I am the Alpha and the Omega the beginning and the end says the Lord the one who was the one who is and the one who is to come the Almighty for those of you who don’t believe that Jesus is God He is God he declares it himself here in this vision I am the all-mighty then John Rowe then verse 9 I John both your brother and your companion in the tribulation and the kingdom of patience of Jesus Christ was on the islands that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ he’s now introducing himself he says he’s your brother in Christ so he’s writing to the church this is a letter to the believers as we’ve already established brought your companion in tribulation and the kingdom and patience of jesus christ he suffered tribulation according to early church history they tried to boil him alive in oil there what other assassination attempts against him and now he is exiled onto the island of Patmos because of his faith in Jesus Christ I was in the spirit on the Lord’s Day so this is talking of Sunday the Lord’s Day the day that Jesus resurrected is the first day of the week I was in the spirit in other words I was praying I was having fellowship with the Holy Spirit I was in the spirit on the Lord’s Day and the Lord revealed himself to John on this a Sunday morning what I don’t know that it was the morning but we certainly know it was on on a Sunday on the Lord’s Day I was in the spirit on the Lord’s Day and I heard behind me a loud voice like the voice of a trumpet a trumpet is a declaration it is an instrument of warfare it is an instrument or announcing right it is that one probable is the announcement and Jesus after the sounding of the announcement the sounding of the trumpet Jesus announced to John saying I am the Alpha I am the mi amiga I am the first I am the last and he said what you see write in a book and send it to the seven churches and then he names the churches this is in verse 11 the seven churches which are in Asia to Ephesus to semana to Pergamos to Fayette IRA to Sardis to Philadelphia and to Laodicea so John was about to be given specific instructions for seven specific churches and we yes can learn from all seven of those and then John said are they in verse 12 I turned aside to see the voice that spoke with me and having turned I saw seven got now stands now this is where people started they oh what is all this metaphors what is all this pictures do we understand what he’s talking about Bible makes it clear it’s nothing difficult here I started to see the voice that spoke to me and having turned I saw seven golden lampstands I was a vision seven lampstands and in the middle of the seven lampstands was one man like a son of man clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band his head and his hair were white like wool as white as snow and his eyes were like a flame of fire his feet were like fine brass as if refined in a furnace and his voice was as the sound of many waters he had in his right hand seven stars and out of his mouth went a two-edged sword and his countenance was like the sun shining in all its strength here John had revealed to him Jesus Christ not the Jesus in the baby so many of our sort of once-a-year visitors to church come to a visit at Jesus who’s still lying in a manger Jesus in line in a manger anymore they come to visit Jesus who is a fisherman or who was a carpenter or who was a Fisher of men should I say all who was that you know the leader of the flock leader of the disciples Jesus is no longer walking around on this earth doing those things well they come to see at Easter a Jesus who is on the cross Jesus is no longer on the cross He is risen he has ascended and he has been glorified and is seated at the right hand of the Father and from there he sees all things and that is the Jesus that we worship we don’t worship a baby we don’t worship a corpse we worship a risen exalted living Jesus Christ and on this description that John had from verses 12 through to verse 17 or through to verse 16 is that is the picture the description of what Jesus is now glorious fearsome almost mighty let let us look at it I saw the one standing amidst the Seven lampstands clothed with a garment down to his feet girl in about the chest with a golden band or gold with talks of gaiety the chest is where the hardest is talking of righteousness is talking of sovereignty and his head and his hair were white like wool as white as snow and his eyes were like a flame of fire his feet were like fine brass as though they had been with finding a furnace he is described as mighty he has been described here as pure as holy as without spot and without blemish he says in the word I shall wash your sins as white as snow he took his my sin your sin he took them upon himself died was buried was resurrected and he’s now seated in heavenly places with his garments and his face and his bid as a white as snow in other words with no blemish with no stain of sin with no stain of my sin he didn’t sit down at the Father’s right hand and God the Father looked him and said I can still see a bit of sin on you it was done away with it was canceled it was finished he was risen glorious and holy and there the description of him is that he is pure and he is holy and verse 15 says his voice is as the sound of many waters well as we look later on in Revelation 13 revelation 17 it talks about the waters it talks about the beast rising up out of the waters and he says the waters represent the nation’s the languages the tongues the tribes of the earth so for it to describe Jesus having a voice like many waters I believe here we can understand that Jesus is available to every single nation to every individual to every single tongue Jesus is multilingual he speaks to me in English you can speak to you in Shona he can speak to you in Japanese you can speak to you in whatever soul tongue it is that you that is your first language or your second language he is available to a whole world the Bible says I would that all men be saved and language is no barrier he has the voice like many waters mighty in power mighty in our rushing mighty waters and yet not just mighty in power but perfectly specifically unique to reach you beautiful isn’t it verse 16 and he has in his right hand seven stars now we go back seven lampstands seven star was awesome what’s going on with only seven the way he snuck don’t be confused this simple and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword his countenance was like the sun shining in all its strength his count the bible tells us in heaven there is no Sun there is no need of a Sun for the glory of the Lord is the light of heaven and the Bible says here in verse sixteen that out of his mouth comes a sharp two-edged sword what the Word of God tells us that the Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword his word is holy it is perfect it is able to separate between soul and spirit between bone and marrow and still his word today speaks his word saves his countenance that his face is shining in all its strength verse 17 Johnson when I saw him I fell at his feet as though I was dead but he laid his right hand on me and said do not be afraid I am the first and I am the last his might you know when some people are prayed for and the power of the Lord hits them particularly in revival settings the you know the power of the Lord comes upon can come upon someone with such might that that they fall to the floor now I know there’s a lot of fakery going on in churches but it is also genuine we saw Paul struck down blind and structure the floor when he encountered the glory of God on the road to Damascus and so we see here that this happened to John he was struck slain in the spirit as though dead you’ll though not dead but just the encounter the power and the might and the presence of God was so overwhelming the body the sinful body was not able to comprehend it and had to surrender and Jesus said to him do not be afraid I am the first and the last I am he who lives yes I was dead but behold I am alive forevermore amen and I have the keys of Hades and death jesus said do not fear I was dead but I am and I shall be alive forevermore our men our men are get means another truth Jesus said I’m speaking the truth throughout his ministry he often started his sentences with the word amen in greek it translates in your Bibles to assuredly I say unto you or verily verily I say unto thee if you read the authorized King James Version now verily verily i censored it means this is the truth it’s the same word as Amen ain’t that the truth so Jesus says verily verily I say unto thee amen and then he speaks the truth and then we hear the truth and we say Amen that was the truth and here he says them he says I am Alive for evermore amen and I have the keys of Hades and death I have the keys Hades literally means the realm the unseen spiritual realm it is the place of the dead it is the place of the Spree weather spirits are well it is the ability it is a the place of work the unseen world it is the literal translation into English they have Hades and some versions will say hell and he says I have the keys now let us understand that connotation who has the key who he who has the keys as control Jesus if he has the keys of death and if he has the keys of Hades if he has the keys to the spirit world to the spiritual realm he is able to lock shut and he is able to unlock and open he ultimately has all power exactly as his all authority was given unto him I said I have the keys of death I have the keys of Hades I have the power to shut and lock I have the power to unlock and open every single power upon earth and in the heavens is definitely under his authority he has the power to speak and they will bow that’s why it says one day every knee shall bow every tongue shall confess so he said to draw and write these things which you have seen and these things which are and the things which will take place after this this is the second or third time and he says it in subsequent verses write this down this is important 7 out why would Jesus be so adamant to John that he had to write this down and send out if every recipient of this letters can understand a word of it we can understand it by God’s grace as the Spirit reveals it to us verse 20 this is the last verse we’re looking at today the mystery of the Seven Stars which you saw in my right hand are the seven golden lampstand the seven golden lampstands the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven churches so the seven lampstands which john saw and he said they are the seven churches the seven churches whom he has been told to write you in Turkey but the lampstand represents the church lamps town represents one church and Jesus himself was seen walking amidst the lampstands which says that Jesus himself ought to have access to walk in your church he walked out access to take your lamps turned out or to keep your lamps down planted where it is he has all the power over the church it is his church he is the head we are the body their body goes where the head determines where it’s going to go the head should not follow where the body wants to go so the seven stars that are in his right hand his right hand representing the place of authority are the seven angels or the seven messengers some translations say the seven pastors the leaders the authority of the church it is in the right hand of Jesus Christ so many churches these days so many churches the pastors the messengers the leaders of that church have denied and have defied the voice of Jesus Christ and are walking away from this Bible and ultimately the warning is that if if the leader of the church wants to attempt to remove itself from the hand of Jesus Christ then Jesus Christ will remove the lampstand and the church will no longer be a part of the body of Jesus Christ and many churches are falling into that sin and into that error it is his church and we are in his hands god bless you guys hope you enjoyed chapter one and we will read together and underst chapter 2 in a few days time be blessed
