Revelation 2:23 – God will judge the works of everyone, both good and bad

Revelation 2:23 – …and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts.

Those who did not repent at Thyatira, the Lord said He would punish as an example and warning to all the churches of what would happen if they lived in unrepentant sin. A similar admonition was given to the church of Corinth, based on the example of the Israelites:

1 Corinthians 10:6-11 – Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.” Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

Recall from Revelation 2:18, that the Lord addressed Himself to the church at Thyatira as “the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire.” We determined in Revelation 1:14 that the “eyes like a flame of fire” relate to judgment and displeasure with sin. Nothing in the hearts and minds of man are “hidden from His sight”:

Hebrews 4:13 – And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

Searching the minds and hearts of men is to look at their motive:

Jeremiah 17:10 – I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.

“Her children”: The church was about 40 years old as John wrote, and her teaching had produced a second generation, advocating the same debauchery.

The word translated reins means “the inner most mind”, perhaps the subconscious mind. The heart will be judged. The motive behind our deeds is just as important as the deed. God has perfect, intimate knowledge of every human heart; no evil can be hidden from Him (Psalm 7:9; Prov. 24:12; Jer. 11:20; 17:10; 20:12).

In the Scripture above, we see that God will not always overlook sin in the church. When His judgment falls, it will begin in the church. Punishment will be swift and so severe that other churches will look and tremble at the punishment.

The works spoken of here are the works of the heart and mind which come to maturity in actual deeds. Good or evil actually begins in the mind and heart. Just as beautiful words cannot come from an evil heart, beautiful deeds cannot either. What we are inside will show in what we do for God.

“According to your works”: Always the basis for future judgment (20:12-13; Matt. 16:27; Rom. 2:6). Deeds or works do not save (Eph. 2:8-9), but they do evidence salvation (James 2:14-26).

Revelation 2:23 – And I will give to each one of you according to your works.

God will judge the works of everyone, both good and bad:

Romans 2:4-11 – Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who “will render to each on according to his deeds”: eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness – indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For there is no partiality with God.

Unbelievers will treasure up wrath, as they continue to defy repentance. The “day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God” is also known as the “Great White Throne Judgment,” where God will judge unbelievers on their works and send them to eternal punishment:

Revelation 20:11-13 – Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.

After the rapture, all believers from the Church Age will stand before the “Judgment Seat of Christ.”Believers will gain or lose rewards, based on their deeds, or works, done during their lifetime. Unrepentant sin, as in the case of Thyatira, would result in the loss of rewards. Christ will reward believers with crowns for their virtuous works:

1 Corinthians 3:8-15 – Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor. For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building. According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

When Jesus returns to set up His Kingdom on Earth, He will reward those who become believers in the Tribulation for their works:

Matthew 16:24-27 – Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.”
