Revelation 2:19 – the motives of the congregation at Thyatira

Revelation 2:19 – I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first.

In Revelation 2:4-5, we discussed that the “first work” was to follow the first of the greatest commandments:

Mark 12:30-31 – ‘…and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.

Apparently the congregation at Thyatira had put more emphasis on their love and works toward others, allowing it to encroach on their devotion to the Lord. However, they were not rebuked for leaving their “first love” like the church of Ephesus (Revelation 2:4). It seems that the motives of the congregation at Thyatira were in the right place, but the love for the Lord was not as great as that for others. Since love, service, faith and patience were not criticized, Thyatira had presumably done well, yielding characteristics of the “fruit of the Spirit”:

Galatians 5:22-53 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
