Revelation 2:16 – doctrine of Balaam

Revelation 2:16 – Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth.

Permitting the “doctrine of Balaam,” and embracing the “doctrine of the Nicolaitans” within the Church, led to doctrinal errors. Jesus warned the church of Pergamos that if they didn’t turn away from their tolerance of such doctrines, that He would “fight against them with the sword of [His] mouth,” which is the Word of God. Incidentally, the prophet Balaam died by a physical sword (Joshua 13:22).

As discussed in Revelation 2:12, correct doctrine comes through the hearing or reading of the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17). We should use the Word of God as an offensive weapon to prevent infiltration of false doctrine from the enemy:

Ephesians 6:12-17 – For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Those that embrace false doctrines can choose to turn a blind eye to true biblical doctrine. Nevertheless, all will be held accountable to contents of the Word:

Hebrews 4:12-13 – For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

“Sword of my mouth” (see note on 1:16).

Repent means to be truly sorry and turn away from evil. Go a new direction. Walk in right standing with the Lord. The sword that Jesus fights with is His Word. There is nothing more powerful than the Word of God. Jesus has not given up on them. He just wants them to change their ways.

Jesus issued a stern warning to the church at Pergamos: “Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.” Although the majority of the church at Pergamos were not deceived and were not following the doctrine of the Balaamites and the Nicolaitans, they were guilty of indifference toward the sin within their church.

But there were some who slipped in unnoticed, and brought false teaching. If you want to know more about all of this false teaching (read 2 Peter chapter 2).
