Revelation 13:8

Revelation 13:8 – All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

As we saw in the last section, the beast will receive authority to rule over the world. The beast doesn’t seem to have much resistance to his global domination, as the passages below show that after he rises from the dead the world will marvel after the beast and worship him:

Revelation 13:3-4 – And I saw one of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed. And all the world marveled and followed the beast. So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?”

Revelation 17:8 – The beast that you saw was, and is not, and will ascend out of the bottomless pit and go to perdition. And those who dwell on the earth will marvel, whose names are not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, when they see the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

John specifies that those who worship the beast are the earth dwellers, whose names are not written in the “Lamb’s Book of Life,” which are those who miss out on eternal life and go to eternal torment for rejecting the Lamb and worshipping the beast:

Revelation 20:15 – And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

Revelation 14:9-11 – Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”

On the other hand, those who refuse to worship the beast and worship Christ instead will likely lose their physical life, but they will have eternal life and reign with the Lord in His earthly kingdom:

Revelation 13:15 – He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.

Revelation 20:4 – And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

The saints who refuse to worship the beast are like Daniel, who was thrown into the lion’s den for refusing to worship the king but continued to serve the Lord instead (Daniel 6). However, in the Tribulation God will not spare the lives of the saints, but instead He allows the beast to prevail over them and kill them:

Daniel 7:25 – ” He shall speak pompous words against the Most High, shall persecute the saints of the Most High, and shall intend to change times and law. Then the saints shall be given into his hand for a time and times and half a time.”

The Tribulation saints’ names are found in the “Book of Life,” along with the names of the saints from all dispensations, both Jew and Gentile:

Daniel 12:1 – “At that time Michael shall stand up, the great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people; and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation, even to that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, every one who is found written in the book.”

Philippians 4:1, 3 – Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved…. And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life.

Revelation 21:2, 24, 27 – Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God… And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it…. But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

And all the saints names were written in the “Book of Life” before creation, from the foundation of the world:

Revelation 17:8 – The beast that you saw was, and is not, and will ascend out of the bottomless pit and go to perdition. And those who dwell on the earth will marvel, whose names are not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, when they see the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

The Lord wrote the names of the overcomers in the “Book of Life” from the foundation of the world, because He foreknew, being omniscient, who would choose Him.

Romans 8:29-30 – For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

Ephesians 1:3-6 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.

God used His foreknowledge to choose who He would adopt as sons to partake in redemption and predestined them to receive an inheritance in Heaven – putting their names in the “Book of Life” before the foundation of the world to “register” them as citizens of Heaven (Philippians 3:20, Hebrews 12:23):

Ephesians 1:7-12 – In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth – in Him. In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.

Predestination working in tandem with free will is a paradox to many, but it is important to recognize that while God uses His foreknowledge to make arrangements for our eternal future, and goes through the process of drawing us to Him through the Spirit to a salvation decision, it does not negate our free will to choose the path of our eternal future, or the fact that He desires all men to come to salvation (1 Timothy 2:3-6, 2 Peter 3:9). In other words, God’s foreknowledge does not equal predetermination of whether we get saved or not. Just because the Lord knows the future and has determined our pre-appointed times and boundaries, He still desires that we seek Him of our own free will:

Acts 17:26-27 – And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their pre-appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us….

“From the foundation of the world”: According to God’s eternal, electing purpose before creation, the death of Christ seals the redemption of the elect forever (compare Acts 2:23; 4:27:28). Antichrist can never take away the salvation of the elect. The eternal registry of the elect will never be altered, nor will the saved in the Antichrist’s day worship him.

“Book of life” (see notes on Rev. 3:5).

“Lamb slain”: The Lord Jesus who died to purchase the salvation of those whom God had chosen was fulfilling an eternal plan.

The unbelievers of the world will be deceived into believing that the Beast is a god (2 Thess. 2:4, 11). Only those whose names are written in the book of life will refuse to worship the Beast. The Beast will persecute the saints of God, and exercise power throughout the world. The Lamb was slain from the foundation of the world in the sense that Christ’s redemptive death for mankind was part of God’s plan from eternity past.

As already seen, humankind has just about come to the conclusion that the only solution to the problem of continuous war is a one world government.

That government will be the devil’s government, established during the Great Tribulation. In the midst of that time he will assume control himself and (as verse 7 tells us), will exercise power over “every tribe, people, language and nation.”

Satan’s “authority” will be all but unlimited, and almost everyone on earth will worship him. This is the very thing Satan has sought from the beginning, worship from angels and men. Of course, believers in Christ will not worship Antichrist, because they will have their names written “in the book of life of the Lamb” (see article “Book of Life – All Books”).

This book of life of the Lamb contains the names of all those who have called on the Lamb of God for salvation.

Verses 9-10: God will punish those who do evil. The Beast and his followers will be overthrown and judged. “Patience” (Greek hupomone), is perseverance or endurance. Those who have genuine saving “faith” will endure all the persecution of the Beast (compare 14:12), because they are God’s “saints” (Greek hagion, “holy” ones).

Free will and the ability to choose is necessary to have true love. If election, or being chosen by God meant that we don’t have a choice to freely accept or reject Him, then we cannot love and serve God of our own free will. There are numerous examples in Scripture where God tests our free will to see if we will follow Him or not. The Lord first tested Adam and Eve, and their failure led to the fall of man. Unfortunately, free will can lead to sin which has consequences, and God being just has to deal with sin, but He was willing to send His Son, the Lamb of God (John 1:36), to pay the price for our sin so that we might have eternal life because He loved us so much (John 3:16-17):

1 Peter 1:18-20 – Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.

When the Lord wrote the overcomers names in the “Lamb’s Book of Life” before the foundation of the world, it was forever – His promise is that He will never blot out anyone’s name written in the “Book of Life,” as discussed in Revelation 3:5:

Revelation 3:5 – He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.

So, we see that everyone who worships the beast is not written in the “Book of Life,” and since they reject the redemption paid for by the Lamb who was slain, they will not inherit eternal life, but go to eternal torment instead. But those who accept the Lamb who was slain will receive an inheritance in eternal life as an adopted son of God.
