Revelation 13:15 – He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.
John noted the beast’s resurrection in the last section, and in this section the false prophet appears to give life to the image of the beast who died and rose again. The common thread of resurrection and deceptive signs and wonders associated with frogs may relate to the plagues in the Exodus and the Egyptian frog goddess of birth and resurrection, Heget, as discussed in Revelation 13:14. The false prophet directs those who worship the resurrected beast to make an image to the beast, and like the Egyptian frog goddess the false prophet is able to give “breath” to the image to make it become lifelike. Images or idols themselves do not have the power to speak:
Psalms 115:4-8 – Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; eyes they have, but they do not see; they have ears, but they do not hear; noses they have, but they do not smell; they have hands, but they do not handle; feet they have, but they do not walk; nor do they mutter through their throat. Those who make them are like them; so is everyone who trusts in them.
Psalms 135:15-18 – The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; eyes they have, but they do not see; they have ears, but they do not hear; nor is there any breath in their mouths. Those who make them are like them; so is everyone who trusts in them.
Habakkuk 2:18 – “What profit is the image, that its maker should carve it, the molded image, a teacher of lies, that the maker of its mold should trust in it, to make mute idols? Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Awake!’ To silent stone, ‘Arise! It shall teach!’ Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, yet in it there is no breath at all.
Nevertheless, the false prophet is able to make the image of the beast speak. Several scholars suggest the lifelike qualities of the image of the beast are merely impressive technology that cause people to believe the image is alive. While it is reasonable to assume technology will help the false prophet spread his deception around the world, the problem with the image appearing alive through technology is that the huge advances of technology are becoming so mainstream that it would take something extraordinary to deceive the masses into believing the image is alive. But it is the false prophet who makes the image speak, so he is either a prodigy in technology, or he recruits exceptional gurus to build the image, or he uses demonic power to make the image become lifelike.
On that note, consider that the Greek word “pneuma” translated “breath” can mean breath, wind, or spirit. Since “breath” has the power to make an inanimate object lifelike, it is either the breath of life that makes the image come alive, or it is a demonic spirit that animates the image making it appear lifelike. Either option would rule out the advanced technology theory.
The only place in Scripture we see an inanimate object come to life is when the rods of Moses and the Egyptian magicians became serpents:
Exodus 7:9-12 – “When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, ‘Show a miracle for yourselves,’ then you shall say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod and cast it before Pharaoh, and let it become a serpent.’ ” So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and they did so, just as the LORD commanded. And Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a serpent. But Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers; so the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments. For every man threw down his rod, and they became serpents. But Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods.
It appears that the rods became living breathing serpents, but only God has the power to give life (Job 12:9-10, Acts 17:24-25). While God has resurrected dead people through men, as discussed in Revelation 13:3, there are no other examples of anyone but God creating new life. This suggests the Egyptian magicians did not create new life out of rods when they became serpents, rather, it is likely they directed demons to animate the rods. Moreover, the life likeness of the image of the beast is probably animation by a demonic spirit and not the “breath of life” making it a living being, since only God has the power to create life.
The following passages show that people worshipped demonic spirits through inanimate idols:
Psalms 106:35-40 – But they mingled with the Gentiles and learned their works; they served their idols, which became a snare to them. They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons, and shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; and the land was polluted with blood. Thus they were defiled by their own works, and played the harlot by their own deeds. Therefore the wrath of the LORD was kindled against His people, so that He abhorred His own inheritance.
2 Chronicles 11:14-15 – For the Levites left their common-lands and their possessions and came to Judah and Jerusalem, for Jeroboam and his sons had rejected them from serving as priests to the LORD. Then he appointed for himself priests for the high places, for the demons, and the calf idols which he had made.
1 Corinthians 10:18-21 – Observe Israel after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything? Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons.
People will worship demons through idols in the Tribulation too, as shown in the passage below. Like other idols in Scripture, these idols cannot see, hear, or walk, but muteness is curiously absent from the list, which may allude to the image of the beast which can speak:
Revelation 9:20 – But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk.
The image of the beast also has power to kill those who don’t worship it. Similarly, Nebuchadnezzar threw Daniel’s friends into the fiery furnace for not worshipping the image the king erected:
Daniel 3:12-15 – “There are certain Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego; these men, O king, have not paid due regard to you. They do not serve your gods or worship the gold image which you have set up.” Then Nebuchadnezzar, in rage and fury, gave the command to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. So they brought these men before the king. Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the gold image which I have set up? Now if you are ready at the time you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, and psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, and you fall down and worship the image which I have made, good! But if you do not worship, you shall be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. And who is the god who will deliver you from my hands?”
Daniel 3:16-20 – Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.” Then Nebuchadnezzar was full of fury, and the expression on his face changed toward Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. He spoke and commanded that they heat the furnace seven times more than it was usually heated. And he commanded certain mighty men of valor who were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, and cast them into the burning fiery furnace.
“Speak”: The false prophet will give the image of Antichrist the appearance of life, and the image will seem to utter words, contrary to what is normally true of idols (compare Psalm 135:15-16; Hab. 2:19).
The False Prophet will cause an image of the Antichrist to be built and will have power to “give breath to the image of the first beast”. In the midst of the Tribulation, after the Antichrist has been slain and resurrected, the False Prophet will cause people to build an image like Nebuchadnezzar’s image and will demand that it be worshiped (see article “Daniel’s Prophecies – Nebuchadnezzar’s Vision”).
By some mysterious means unknown in the previous history of the world, he will give life to that image. How long it will manifest life we are not told. What characteristics it will have we are not told. Possibly the only characteristic it will manifest is that it can “speak” (verse 15). This speech will be caused by the False Prophet, who in turn will get his authority from the Antichrist and the dragon, Satan himself.
“Cause … should be killed”: His gentleness is a lie, since he is a killer (7:9-17). Some Gentiles will be spared to populate the kingdom (Matt. 25:31-40), and Jews will be protected (12:17).
He will issue an order that all who do not worship him will be killed. (Rev. 20:4), tells us that many will be slain by the guillotine.
Everything the false prophet does is calculated to increase the power and authority of the Antichrist. That is not surprising, for he receives his own power and authority from the Antichrist.
Verses 16-18: Only unbelievers will receive the “mark” of the “beast” (see article “Mark of the Beast”). The “mark” will be place either on the “right hand” or on the “forehead”, both very visible places. No one will be able to “buy” or “sell” anything without having; thus submitted to the political and religious system of the Beast. The word “mark” (Greek charagma), is often used to describe an image, stamp, brand, or other mark (compare Acts 17:29). According to (verse 17), the mark of the beast may be;
(1) The “name of the beast” (either the person or the empire);
(2) The “number” of the Beast’s “name” (666) or;
(3) An image or other representation of the Beast (compare 3 Maccabees 2:29).
The “number of the beast” is 666, the “number of a man (Greek Anthropos, “man” or “mankind”). This number may be;
(1) The number of imperfection or humanity (666, the evil trinity, rather than 777, the holy Trinity, also 888 is the numerical value of Iesous (i.e. Jesus);
(2) A number representing the Antichrist’s name, which will be recognized by believers during the Tribulation period; or
(3) A number derived from the Hebrew spelling of Caesar Nero (Kaisar Neron), who prefigured the Antichrist in his evil actions (compare Antiochus Epiphanes in Daniel chapter 8).
It was the king who tried to kill the three Jewish men for not bowing down to the statue, but the image of the beast will have power to kill those who refuse to worship it – a real life terminator! We don’t know how the image will kill people, but since it is able to speak, it is reasonable to conclude that the image will probably command others to execute those who refuse to bow down and worship.
The world makes the image to the beast and for the beast and the world worships both the beast, as we saw in Revelation 13:4, and the image of the beast, as shown here in verse 15. The following passage shows how the beast is connected to idolatry:
Zechariah 11:16-17 – For indeed I will raise up a shepherd in the land who will not care for those who are cut off, nor seek the young, nor heal those that are broken, nor feed those that still stand. But he will eat the flesh of the fat and tear their hooves in pieces. “Woe to the worthless shepherd, who leaves the flock! A sword shall be against his arm and against his right eye; his arm shall completely wither, and his right eye shall be totally blinded.”
As discussed in Revelation 13:3, the beast is the “worthless shepherd.” The word translated “worthless” is usually translated “idols,” but it can also describe something with no value. While the beast is certainly worthless as a leader, describing him as the “idol shepherd” also shows how the world will worship him through idolatry. This passage also shows that the head wound of the beast is through the eye and he also suffers a wound to his arm, which would include his hand. As we will see in the next section, the false prophet will command everyone to receive a mark on either their right hand or the forehead. It is interesting that placement of the mark is on the same parts of the body as the beast’s wounds, the head and the hand, which shows allegiance to the beast and Satan.
