Revelation 1:11 – God’s instruction for the prophet Habakkuk to write the account of his vision on tablets

Revelation 1:11 – …saying, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last…”

See Revelation 1:8 for commentary about “the Alpha and Omega.”

The Greek word “protos” translated as “first” is where we derive the English word “prototype.” Christ is the prototype, or “firstborn” of the resurrected, whom we are going to “conform” to:

Romans 8:29 – For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

The Greek word “eschatos” translated as “last” is where we derive the English word “eschatology,” or the study of “last things.” “Eschatos” can also mean “uttermost,” which denotes that the Lord is paramount of all that there is; without limit or end:

Hebrews 7:24-25 – But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

The title: “The First and the Last” is also another way to convey God’s eternal nature:

Isaiah 41:4 – “Who has performed and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? ‘I, the LORD, am the first; and with the last I am He.'”

Isaiah 44:6-7 – Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: ‘I am the First and I am the Last; besides Me there is no God. And who can proclaim as I do? Then let him declare it and set it in order for Me, since I appointed the ancient people. And the things that are coming and shall come, let them show these to them.’

Isaiah 48:3, 5, 12-13 – I have declared the former things from the beginning; they went forth from My mouth, and I caused them to hear it. Suddenly I did them, and they came to pass…. Even from the beginning I have declared it to you; before it came to pass I proclaimed it to you…. “Listen to Me, O Jacob, and Israel, My called: I am He, I am the First, I am also the Last.Indeed My hand has laid the foundation of the earth, and My right hand has stretched out the heavens; when I call to them, they stand up together.”

Revelation 1:11 – …and, “What you see, write in a book…”

The Lord commanded John to write in a book the Revelation as it unfolded before him. In ancient times, books were in the form of a scroll, which is a continuous roll of papyrus, parchment, or tablets. Here is a similar example where God told the prophet Habakkuk to write the account of his vision on tablets:

Habakkuk 2:2-3 – Then the LORD answered me and said: “Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.”

Revelation 1:11 – “…and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.”

When John finished recording the events revealed to him, he was to send his account to seven specific churches in Asia, or current day Turkey.

Note on the map below, the churches are given in clockwise in order. Some speculate that one of the reasons the Lord listed these church in this order, is because it would have been the most efficient route for someone to hand deliver the message.
