LEARN HITFILM EXPRESS 2017 IN 11 MINUTES! – Tutorial For Beginners

Mission commander John Young stepped onto the decart a.m. Eastern Standard Time yo Darius Britt here and we’re about to jump into hitfilm express 2017 for those of you who want to get into video editing and visual effects but you’ve got exactly zero dollars and fifty cents in your pocket you may want to look into hit film it’s free and you can do a bunch of stuff like editing visual effects audio work color grading it’s like in all-in-one now there is a paid version hitfilm Pro however we are just covering the free version for now we’re gonna walk you through the basics of hip gum there is no way to show you everything about this application in one video but you’ll have more than enough to get you started you can run hit film on a Mac or PC the minimum requirements are 4 gigabytes of RAM but for optimum performance your computers should have 16 gigabytes or more when it comes to the processor your computer should have at least an Intel i5 or i7 with 4 or more cores you can run hit film on a laptop as well but I am NOT gonna go into all the specs for that more than likely whatever laptop you’re using can probably handle it if you do not have it installed you can go to hitfilm.com ford slash Xpress create an account download the application and you’re on your way the first page you’ll see is the home page lots of cool stuff here tutorials you have add-on so you can buy to the right click new project and that’ll take us to the new project tab first things first configure your project settings the easiest thing to do where it says template select a preset that matches your camera and then they’ll set it all up for you booyah click start editing interface we’ve got the media panel on the bottom left this is where we import media and organize files next to that we have the timeline window this is where most of the magic happens we’ve got the editing tools along the side of the timeline here we’ve got the audio meters all the way to the far right which display the volume levels of the clips during playback we’ve got a tremor to the top left where you can preview clips and select which parts of the clips you want to use and then of course we have the preview window which you can think of as a monitor showing you the playback on the main timeline or displaying whatever frame your playhead hovers over importing in the media panel you’ll see a folder that says import if you click it you can navigate all the way to the folder that has your media on your computer but what I usually do is I have a window open already and I just drag it and drop it into the media panel it’s usually best practice to organize all your clips of media into folders to keep everything organized if you click on any clip in the media panel it appears in the trimmer you can watch the clip here let’s edit something drag the playhead to where you want to start the clip and then click the end point next drag the playhead to where you want to end the clip and click the out point do you see the color change that means you’ve just selected so congratulations you can either drag and drop the selected clip into the timeline or you can click the import button here and it will insert it into the timeline now this first clip was shot in 1280 not the full 1920 and it’s also in 60 frames slow-motion so the first thing I need to do is blow it up to 1920 by 1080 you can just drag the corners of the clip to expand it and resize it and then if we right click on the clip we can reduce the speed by 50% to give us that slow motion slow motion slow-mo if you hover over the edges of the clips you can also trim them on the timeline as well you need to have the selector arrow tools selected for this though now back to the tools over here we’re not gonna go through all seven of these because most of them you probably won’t use that often the first one we have is the arrow this selects things you can grab a clip and move it around or you can select a group of clips and move them around next we’ve got the grabber tool which we can use to navigate the timeline when you have an insanely large project this definitely comes in handy if we select this razor tool here we can click on any clip and cut it up if you hit control Z on the PC that’s the shortcut for undo you Mac users out there you know the shortcut for undo it’s the same thing we’ve got the ripple edit tool which functions the same as any other editing application when selected you can trim a clip without having to close any gaps at the bottom we’ve got the snap tool which looks like a cute little magnet when you click that sucker your eclipse will snap to each other very convenient especially when you’re moving Clips around reduces the likelihood of accidental clip gap we can add audio to the project as well if I select an audio track or a WAV file in the media panel it will appear as a waveform in the tremor panel yo Darius Bert here so you want to learn how to use hitfilm okay well we’re gonna same thing applies you can trim all the stuff you don’t want and keep all the stuff you do I got in a drag the file from the tremor into the timeline and place it where you want it we could also drag the file directly from the media panel if we wanted to you know Darius Britt here so you want to let’s do a quick little cleanup here yo darius we’re here so you want to learn how to use and hitfilm okay well we’re gonna take you through the so I’m hearing ambience off of the video track that I don’t want to hear so let’s move that we can mute a track by clicking the speaker icon to the right of it yo darius Britt here so you want to learn how to use it much better and we can hide a video track in the same way by clicking the eyeball icon let’s add some music you can drag and drop a music track into the timeline just like an audio track you know arias right here so you want to learn now the music is way too hot if we isolate just the music and look at the levels it’s coming in at negative 6 that’s really loud we’re gonna drag the volume line in the center of the clip down to make a quick adjustment to the levels that’s much better transitions going to the effects panel you’ll see a folder that says transitions for video if you expand the folder you’ll see all of the transitions that you can use let’s go ahead on and throw a classic cross dissolve on there you can just drag the effect from the media panel and drop it onto a cup point between two Clips super easy you know Darius Britt here now let’s go to the audio transitions and add a fade to the music fades in yo Darius Britt here so you want to learn how to oh yeah text entitles you can’t do texts or titles in the editor you have to use a composite shot for this you can either hit new composite shot in the media panel or you can select a clip right click on it and select composite shot in the timeline we’re gonna go ahead on and create a new composite shot from the media panel let’s call it booyah make sure your composite shot matches the same timeline settings we’ll set the duration to 5 seconds why not now we can create all kinds of things with shots this is where you would do your visual effects work your titling motion tracking etc we can also change the layout of the software so that it’s much easier to work on our composite shots by changing our workspace for you to composite through the menu now we can create a title two ways the first is by right clicking in the timeline and selecting text or you can just grab the text tool and draw yourself a cute little box and then you can just start typing stuff if you want to make adjustments you can select it and then in the text panel you can choose the font you can mess with the size the color all the usual trappings of editing that you’re used to there are plenty of options let’s animate the opacity of the text we can start by hitting the transform controls in the timeline find the opacity if you click the little circle under opacity whenever the playhead is on the timeline you’ll see a keyframe appear if we move anywhere else on the timeline and just change the value of the opacity it will automatically create another keyframe I’ll set the first keyframe to zero so we can get a nice little fade in keep in mind you can do this exact same thing with any property scale position rotation once you’re done you can add the title or text to the main edit by going to the main editor you’ll see the composite shot you just made in the media panel just drag it from the media panel onto the timeline drop it and boom there it is over top of everything it looks like there’s audio attached to it that we don’t want so you can right click and we can unlink the media and then you can just delete the audio portion I’m gonna go ahead on and delete the audio off the other clips too now I’d like to do custom titles because they just look boss sauce so let’s do a custom title we’re gonna go down to make a new composite shot the photo is at a much higher resolution in 1920 by 1080 so we’re gonna have to rescale this let’s find these scale under transform options and scale it to size and we got to get rid of the green here under effects let’s find the color difference key simply drag and drop to apply it make sure it’s set to green if it’s not already and boom we just keyed out all that green then drag and drop the comp into the editor done exporting when you’re ready to export you see this little film icon on the toolbar that says export contents click it this place is either the timeline or whatever in and out points you set on the timeline into the export queue select your preset I’m gonna go with YouTube 1080p HD it’s an mp4 make sure you set the destination for the file and then once you’ve done all that hit start export hashtag booyah you can do an awful lot in this application if you’re new to all this and feel a little overwhelmed don’t worry just keep editing you’ll grow into your understanding of
